    E53 X5 3.0 liter - can it tow ?

    Hi,

Anybody here using E53 3.0 as a tow vehicle for a smaller bmw or similar car, think 2500lbs car .

I've had my share of experiences with the 4.4L e53 and don't want to go there again, so wondering if a 3.0 will be able to handle it or not?

Looking for input from folks who have or are using one for towing.

    Thanks.

If I remember correctly when I was looking i to them the tow rating for the 6 and 8 was the same. Somebody correct me if I am wrong...

This may or may not be helpful but I have lots of experience towing with a similar vehicle, a 2008 acura mdx. Towed dozens of e36s on flat bed trailers and the ol Ac handled it just fine. Even in the snow...

I have a 05 3.0i and i bought it just to tow my 14 foot escapecruz boat + its trailer. My truck was a custom build (waited 4 months for it) and I have the FACTORY OPTIONED tow package... its not an aftermarket tow package or an oem package that was installed after, it came from the factory this way so you know it was done right. I use my x5 to "launch" the boat which i need to do from a pretty steep incline, getting it down the slope is never a prob obviously but once the boat is back on the trailer (inside the water) i need to "tow" it up a pretty steep incline to pull the boat + trailer out of the water. I have the steptronic trans so i drop it in 1st and slow gas it out of the water with no problem... and the lake bed is made of softball size rocks that the trailer hops over without issue, i can see the boat dancing in my rear view mirror. Point is since it passes this test (steep incline with boulders) with flying colors then I cant imagine towing a sedan would be a tougher test so know the 3.0i tows like a champ.

The Bentley manual lists the 3.0i model has a towing capacity, braked, of 5000 lb. The 4.4i is 6000 lb.
    Torque (lb.-ft.) is 293 @ 3500 rpm for the 3.0i -- 324 for the 4.4i
