Hello there, i am new here, but not to the E46 DIY lol, been fixing the various problems that appear, so far so good but...
So i have a very weird noise on cold start and after 1min or so it stops and if the car is warm it does not sound, and i cannot find the source, its not the SAP, not the power steering pump, i tried to listening to everything with a stick, might be a tensioner or something? I can upload a audio clip tomorrow, its really annoying me lol
The car is a 98' e46 318i with 200 000km on the clock.
Thanks to all.
The symptoms you describe points to secondary air pump,
Pictured here:http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_2193
The secondary pump had a problem something ago, had a very bad noise so i cleaned the egr and it solved the noise apparently, but its not the SAP.
So did some checking again in the SAP and the noise comes from the system, so i tried to disconnect the the plug or sensor to the SAP and a brown fluid come out! This is normal ?
RUST!
Water formed by condensation runs down the hose and collects, pools at the pump.
Remove the hose between the EGR valve and the pump, peer into the pump at the opening,
you will probably see pooled, rusty, water. EGR failure caused the pump failure due to water.
If the pump is replaced, don't ignore and forget to replace the EGR valve also.
Disgusting stuff LOL, i disconnect the SAP for now, i need to replace all the system but to many things to do and no $$$ , for now its going to be disconnected, thanks for the help!
I understand the $$$ problem myself, sometimes. You should be fine with it disconnected ,until you are able to replace.
It is an emissions system, hope you don't have strict emissions standards, testing in your area, Good Luck!
