Hello all so I have an issue with my sound system in my 98 z3. When I got the car the radio read "Code" but I had no idea what it meant but I did know there was no sound. So my smart self just through in a new radio and expected it to work and I was wrong. So idk what to do. Do you guys think the amplifier is locked as well? If so do you guys think it would just be cheaper to buy a new amp and wire it up to the new radio? Please help
BMWs of that era had head units that required a code when installed or when a disconnected battery was reconnected. It's an anti-theft feature. The dealer can provide the code when you provide proof of ownership, the car's VIN and the head unit serial #. As for the aftermarket head unit: it has to send a 12VDC signal to the amp to turn the amp on.
I was thinking the same thing but just tried hooking up the stock radio but it won't power on...well the display won't at least
Hi,
It's your choice on how you want to proceed. If you want the oem head unit only, then search for a known working unit that also comes with the 'code' it needs to power on. If you want a modern head unit with modern features, then purchase the one you'd like and perhaps have a local, reputable and knowledgeable car audio installer or 12V auto electrician fit it properly and safely for you.
Cheers, Dennis!

If your running an aftermarket radio it will turn on and display no sound. On mine when it did that I had to connect the blue amp wire to I think it was a green or brown wire thats left over. Once thats connected I got sound to all my speakers.
