Greetings, friends.
I had a very interesting week, and thought I'd share a couple of the fun bits. We don't get many of these, and while they don't pay a bunch, they do give a sense of having accomplished something really positive.
First is a car I sent home today. F25 X3, came in with a Christmas tree on the displays, including "Chassis Stability", ABS, Brake, Traction, 4x4, and others.
Dealer had (apparently) told owner that ABS module was bad, and transfer case was exploded.
Indeed, driving forward and turning, all hell broke loose and it felt like an old Chevy 4x4 with two welded diffs, and transfer case locked, on pavement. In fact, the violence of the car's reaction actually stopped the vehicle dead in its tracks with loud , seemingly metal to metal banging.

Diagnostic Report compiled by Autologic Diagnostics

I was told that the codes had just been cleared by an Indie BMW shop, no diagnosis made.
Codes which reset instantly when the car was moved were the two Transfer case related codes.
I suspected a bad transfer case, or, because the violent stop which felt like drivetrain lock-up happened when the wheel was turned, perhaps a front diff issue. I couldn't bring myself to leave the parking lot, because the violence of the reaction made me think I'd hurt something expensive.
But this morning, I decided to unplug the ABS/DSC, on a hunch. And, while I got even MORE warning messages ("End of the world is Nigh", etc.), the violence stopped, and the car could steer again.
Pulled up live data for wheel speed sensors, and sure enough, RF read zero, with others showing a speed. Swapped RF with LF, and zero reading followed sensor, so I ordered sensor.
Replaced sensor, cleared codes, and none returned, and car drove perfectly.
I'm quite amazed that a single bad wheel speed sensor could have caused not only the horrible violent behavior, but dozens of codes from a dozen computers!
Live and learn....
Fun job #2 -- and Land Rovers are NEVER fun!
~2010 (? I forget?) Land Rover Discovery. Ford 5 liter V8. Towed in, dumps coolant.
Local Land Rover dealership had told owner he needed a new engine, that this one had exploded due to overheat. Cost will be $14,000. Unquote.
Customer wanted a second opinion, had the car towed to us.
Cooling system poured water out near water pump as fast as I put it in. Not an easy engine to see, so I asked for two hours to take it apart and diag. Pulled intake manifold and tons of plumbing....and found a broken plastic water manifold, in the "V".
Ordered and replaced the part, sealed everything up again, and car runs great, no issues, no overheating on 2 long drive cycles, up a steep mountain. Saved the customer ~$13,500.
And, well, there are the two incredibly beautiful women with two Minis which need help....I'd work on their cars for FREE!
A good week, all in all!
Happy Friday, friends.

It's always satisfying to solve what seems like a big, complicated problem with a simple and elegant solution.

Great Work Chris!! What isit with women and MINI's They are awful cars lol where are the girls from :p
C217 S63 AMG S Cabriolet ( Daily )
E87 116i with mild cams, headers, cold air intake making 136 bhp Lol (My Learning Track Car)
E36 328i Sport ( Project in making and future race/track car )
Who cares why girls love them? The important thing is that GIRLS LOVE THEM. So if we can fix them, we have a good way to make ourselves attractive to girls, right?
Umph, sorry...met the most deliriously gorgeous woman today, I've got to fix her Mini. She calls it "BadAss". Hers is seriously magnificent, maybe the best I've ever seen.

We just did the plastic v pipe on a landrover
@bmwdirtracer
I'm glad your problem was solved. I've been having kind of similar problem with my 2011 BMW X3 28i Xdrive. A few months ago the following lights came on (ABS, Park, Traction control, Brake and 4x4). The car brakes and drives perfectly fine. I took my car to the BMW dealer and they said that my DSC module was internally damaged and that I had to replace my DSC Unit, which was going to cost around $4,500 (parts + labor + re-coding).
I asked them to give me all the codes they found and they gave me the following: (the ones in bold/red are the some of the same codes you also had)
- 480131 [ICM: Internal Control Unit Fault]
- D017A3 [DSC interface (actual number of sensor edges wheel, 64.1.2): Signal invalid]
- D017C5 [Interface DSC (actual speed, wheel, 46.0.1): Signal invalid]
- D3AC8D [DSC interface (status, hydraulic function, 25D): Signal invalid]
- 480A5B [DSC unit: Internal, pump, speed]
- 800F92 [Welcome light, repeat interlock, active]
- 801405 [CON: undervoltage]
- B7F6B4 [Instrument panel: Switch-off fault in the display unit, no signal]
- E114DB [Instrument panel: Demand based service message, message from CBS subscriber (BBH) missing]
- E114DC [Instrument panel: Demand based service message, message from CBS subscriber (BBH) missing]
I purchased a used DSC unit from eBay, but the DSC module needs to be coded with my current VIN and dealer said they will not reset the code and that I have to buy either a whole new DSC unit or the DSC module by itself, which is actually a bit cheaper but its still going to cost around $1,200.00
I have also contacted a few places I found online that rebuild DSC modules [modulemaster and myairbags] and I was told that they don't work on the DSC modules from BMW X3 2011 and up.
I guess my question is, where do I start? What do you recommend me doing first to rule out other simpler and cheapest causes?
Just FYI, I don't have any diagnostic scanners, which i'm sure I'll be needing. Is there one that you recommend??
I really appreciate your help. Last few months have been so frustrating, especially every time I start the car and having to stare at these stupid lights.
Thank you
I am having a similar problem, but after I went to change a fuse for the door locks. I pulled a few of the wrong fuses, due to bad vision / negative 10 temperatures whilst laying in the footwell. Finally got the right fuse in and the door locks worked. Car started fine....but will not go into gear or indicate a gear or park. Transmission Malfunction, airbag malfunction and drive malfunction all come up. Brakes too. Car is basically an immobile brick.
I checked the fuses I had previously pulled and they are all good (2 other fuses, one of which was fuse 36, a similar blue 15 amp fuse to the door locks.). This is a transmission fuse. I notice that the shift lever does not light up, making me think the lever itself might be dead. There is also no position indication on the dash now (P, N, D...)
Any ideas?
Thank you!

This isn't the thread for just adding general questions. You need to start your own thread for something like that, and you need to COMPLETELY identify the car, including the engine/model...not just X3.
All that said, you need two things: You need to go back into the fuse box and put everything right. Obviously you didn't do this. Secondly, you're going to need a BMW specific scan tool which can read all BMW codes from every computer...and erase them, after diagnosing and fixing the issues. (For instance, airbag codes will not delete themselves and turn off the light, even after fixing it - you have to clear them. A generic scan tool is of no use to you here.
Looks like you'll be having the car towed to a BMW specialist shop. I'd say you can find one easily where you live, but since it doesn't get to negative ten in SF, I guess your location is incorrect.

No "fun" this week, MD safety inspection on grand daughters Jeep is $300 so far, and tags are expiring cuz the inspector has been out sick, got a new ball joint press tool to replace pretty good ball joints, and a new wheel bearing for a perfect old one!, replaced all the "non standard"lights with stock less safe ones!!, did fix the parking brake, the only real problem.
Wow! Here you honk your horn, they check your turn signals and lights actually work, and away you go.
