I have a BMW 850i of 1991 end I need to do a diagnosis.
where is the OBD port?
what kind of connector?
thanks
Ok tanks, is a round connector with 20 pin
I would try the pedal Fault code diagnostic first. (see attachment).
Depress the pedal to the floor 5 time in 5 seconds for DME#1 and 6 times in 5 seconds for DME#2.
You must turn the key from off to Run the depress the throttle as required to start each diagnostic flash code session
It may take a little practice to get the flash code from the CEL correct but you have time as the codes will loop until you interrupt them.
Good luck
^This. The stomp test will give you a good idea of any issue you are having. You look new to the forum, so if you are having an issue, just post and you will usually get a quick response. You will find this forum a valuable resource for any problems with your 8. Mine probably wouldn't be running without the help here (or I would have went broke bringing it to a shop).
My Cars - 1991 BMW 850i - mine for fun, 1993 Saab 900c - mine for fun, 2008 Lexus is250 - my daily driver, 2003 Dodge Durango - my wife's, 1994 Acura Legend - gave it to kid
You could also use a Foxwell NT510 with the adapter cable (round connector on one end to connect to regular OBDII cable on unit) it Reads OBDI codes. I ordered mine with the BMW code installed and it works nicely.... reads control modules etc... even engine numbers while engine running...
I may need to purchase the INPA software and a laptop if my HP Win10 will not work to see if it helps diagnose the erratic problem I continue to have with my car. Is there a particular version of INPA I should use for the E31? Or will the latest version work? I do see several packages available on ebay, like, Progman BMW & Mini INPA EDIABAS DIS GT1 V44 and V57 software. I also see a download for INPA 6.4.3 on http://www.car-auto-repair.com/bmw-i...free-download/. Thanks,

JDP530: Recommended versions for the E31 are EDIABAS (INPA) 6.4.3 or 6.4.7 and DIS v44. Later DIS versions work fine as well but after v44 the coding functionality was stripped from DIS so v44 remains the best version for the E31 (it's possible to merge diagnosis from later versions with coding from v44 but there really is nothing new in later versions for the E31). If you wish to diagnose the M70 DME modules in INPA you will need hacked files (link) because the original files only work with 1995+ E31.
What is way more important for the E31 is the interface (the "cable"). Most E31 modules require an ADS interface with a real RS-232 serial port (which rules out many modern computers). USB interfaces or USB-to-serial adapters usually do not work.
Also note that EDIABAS requires a 32-bit operating system (EDIABAS 7.x works with 64-bit operating systems but is incompatible with ADS interfaces and thus the E31). Look up some of the installation tutorials because if you are not really computer-savvy you may be better off with a pre-installed package...
