1993 325i speedo working intermittently

1993 325i. Bought the car about a month or so ago, around a week ago the speedo/mpg gauge started only working around half the time i drive the car. Figuring it was the speed sensor, I replaced it (the one near the diff). After this, the speedo/mpg still only work around half the time. Anyone know why this could be the case?

The spedo sensor is in the diff cover. But, obd1 clusters are known to go to shi$. So next year me it acts up, slam the top of the dash with your hand, see if it cokes back to life. Then u will know where the problem is

i replaced the speedo sensor in the diff cover. i tried doing the gauge test where i hold down the trip counter and turned the key to the first position, and both the mpg gauge and the speedo worked as intended.
