2001 3 series convertilble will not close and lock

2001 325ci convertible top when putting top up, it will not close. About 12 inches from closing left side locking arm comes out and the top stops 12 inches from closing. Can put the top down. Dealer says over $2000. to replace some part. Any thoughts and if I have to have it repaired, any suggestions who can fix this other than a dealer? Live in NC.

same thing happened. Both roof latches broke in roof. Originally they said one side.But recommended doing both. So I did both and when they took it apart, they told me second latch would not have lasted a week. Yes it was $2300.00. Not dealer.....parts were the most expensive part.
