    Rod knock

I have a 2011 535xdrive with 136,000 miles on it. Dealer suspects that I have rod knock and may need a new engine. I have read many articles here about the rod knock and suspect reasons as to how and why it happens. I'm not a mechanic, hence looking for solid advice if I should have a private mechanic try to replace the rod and any other components, replace with a rebuilt engine, or go with the dealer suggestion on a new engine ($25-30,000). Interesting, my friends M335 literally had the engine go two weeks ago, but replaced with a new one as it was CPO through BMW. His engine only had 40,000 miles on it. Is this a problem for these engines?

    Thank you for any guidance!

If you've got active rod knock chances are you've spun a bearing and the crankshaft is scored. It is more cost effective to replace the engine as a whole than repair whats happened to yours.

Spun rod bearings are most typically caused by prolonged oil service intervals, low quality engine oil & filter being utilized, high load/rpm before engine oil temperature is fully warmed up.

N55's are great reliable engines, typical failure modes are owner inflicted as noted above.
