1994 840Ci Transmission Service at 142,510 miles. Who has serviced their 840ci Trans

Who has had a Transmission Service on their 840ci? I am having a Transmission service on my 1994 840ci with 142,510 miles on the dial. I am having a hesitation in reverse gear only. This started a month ago. But I have put 5,000 miles on the dial do to using her as my daily driver (40 to 50 miles a day round trip). We also have a lot of highway construction (dust). I also hear a short sound similar to running over bumpy concrete (short then stop - sometimes). She shift find and forward gears seam good. I don't think there is/was a leak. But hopefully changing the oil and filter will help. As I will need her for another few months while my daily is being worked on.

    Any thought or similar situation?

    Thanks!

I serviced mine (when it was still an automatic) at around 150,000 miles and it did not seem to help or hurt anything. If you are having issues with reverse, a valve body rebuild is most likely necessary. This is a known issue with the ZF 5HP30 and even other BMWs that use this transmission often lose reverse at some point.

I rebuilt the valve body and changed the flilters/fluid at around 120,000mi. Like Olin, I didn't really notice a difference before and after. I mainly did it to prevent any problems going forward.

FWIW I still have that transmission sitting in storage, free to a good home if anyone needs one. Only put about 3k miles on it before I did the 6sp swap. PM me if interested.

I would do the valve body given what you say about reverse. Maybe change the fluid and filter for now and if the problem persists, consider rebuilding it.

Fluid and filter cost me more than the valve body overhaul kit. Not a horrible job, but time consuming and detailed oriented. Worth looking into in the long run.

Transmission Service has helped! I recommend it. Total Kit online, ebay and All Imports. Everyone Thanks for the replies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, I was very lucky! No metal in the old fluid, but fluid and filter needed changing! If you are keeping, change the fluid and filter!!!!!!!
