    E39 525TDS 1998 : strange thing with 20 pins connector

    Hello bimmers !
A friend bought a very nice 525 tdsA, a bit slow, but very nice...
I wanted to plug my (of course working) inpa with 20 pin connector (allready tested on another e39) and....
Nothing, no light on the cable, inpa comm' is disturbed... (also tested an x431, nothing)
(these devices work, they were tested just after on my e60, everything is fine).

So, there's a problem with the car ?
    Here is the plug:

pin 15 is not installed, so it's not ads (right ?)
there's is no n°17 pin, (ok but...?)
And normally, there are only two +12v (right again ? 12v and ignition), i have four or five +12v
(pin numbers with 12v will come later)
I'm afraid for him, and her !

    Thanks for reading !

ps: checked, there is no 16 pin connector

Use your Digital Multimeter to check voltages on the pins of your 20 pin diagnostic connector. Your DDE and ancililiary modules are connected to pin 20, which should show at least 3.5v (ignition on, engine off). You should see 12v on pins 14 (battery +) and pin 16 (ignition +) pin 19 is ground. Check fuses F15 (7.5A) and F38 (5A) located in the top of the glove compartment (eyeballing them is not good enough - physically remove the fuses and check them with your meter). Do the fuse check first and if still no diagnostics or decent voltage on pin 20 of the 20 pin diagnostic connector, the problem is likely to be corrosion in the fuse splice (connector X183 - located in the driver's side footwell) - see further information re thiis connector in this post https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...les-except-DME

    Hello Sir David !
thanks a lot to spend time with me !
Here is a picture of what my friend has measured with his multimeter:

I think he wrote 17 instead of 18...
    And to explain:
    - "+ APC" is "ignition +" (they are 4 !)
    - "+ perm" is "battery +"
On pin 20, there is 8.78V...

The 20 pin connections for the M51 engine should be as follows:-
    Pin 4 - Terminal R Fuse 38 (+12v)
Pin 16 - Terminal 15 (Battery Positiive (+12V) with ignition on)
Pin 14 - Terminal 30 (Battery Positive (+12V) always hot via fuse 114)
Pin 12 - Generator warning light
Pin 1 - DDE Control Module
    Pin 18 - Programming voltage
    Pin 19 - Terminal 31 (Ground)
Pin 7 - Service Reset (Service reset is accomplished by shorting Pin 7 to ground for a predetermined time period with ignition on)
    Pin 20 Diagnostic TXD line.

Remember that low battery voltage is probably the number#1 cause of diagnostic failure - ALL connections should be clean and firm, resistance between pin 19 and ground should be as near as possible to zero and voltages on pins 14 and 16 should be at least 12.6v with the engine running.
