2008 X5 3.0si (49,000) vs 2011 X5 xDrive 35i Premium (98,000)
Looking at both... at the same price or very close. Both are Space Gray. The 08 is super clean with gray interior and the 11 is also clean with black interior.
Both are similarly equipped.
Is there anything that I should be on the look-out for on either vehicle? Any inherent issues that were/are plaguing either model? Any particular reason to focus on one over the other? Is the 3 year newer model worth giving up double the mileage?
Many thanks!
Find out the service history is available or not.
You can go with 45 k mileage, and start dealing with multiple issues that arise from this mileage.
Or go with 98 k mileage, if those issues are already addressed.
Issues including but not limited to:
Water pump and tstat failure
Leaking gaskets(valve cover, oil filter housing, oil cooler, oil pan, transmission pan)
Tires
Battery
Coolant Expansion tank
Atf change
Transfer case oil change
And many other repairs/maintenance that are due at 50k to 100 k.
Good luck.

I have a 2008 X5 3.0si (186K miles)...
If you are a DIYer, go for the 2011 with the extra miles. You get a better engine, the facelift, black interior, and upgraded iDrive. If the iDrive controller in the 2008 isn't bad, it will be soon. The electronics and engine upgrades associated with the 2011 are worth the extra miles IMO. The gasket repairs listed above are not too hard. In addition to the things listed above, I have had to change my starter, but nothing else major. The starter and water pump are both in really hard to get to places, so the labor adds up, therefore my recommendation for the newer, higher mileage car only if you do your own work.
If you are not a DIY type, go with the low miles. That is super low miles for a 10-year old car.
LCI looks damn nice but I'll go with the lower mileage. Sure the higher mileage vehicle may have gone through full maintenance or even some engine repairs, but the way a 50k car rides compared to a 100k, is noticeable imo. That's assuming both vehicle were driven with care.
