Magnaflow's heavy metal series actually refers to the concentration of the catalytic precious metals in the washcoat, rather than substrate material.

http://www.magnaflow.com/products?partnumber=99009HM here's a random example. Magnaflow does produce metallic substrate cats but I haven't ever found them lol

Yes, the "heavy metal" ones are heavily loaded, but they make ceramic core, metal core, and heavy metal core. The ceramic ones cannot be loaded with enough heavy metals, and trigger some CEL's on cars with really high emission standards...hence the heavy metal series...which are the standard metal cores with more heavy metals added.

They should change the term to something like "catalyst materials" instead of "heavy metals".

So, ceramic or metal core, high-flow will work fine. 400 cell count (but you can do 200 cell count if you don't need the extra "cleaning" of the exhaust gases. Only get the heavily loaded (heavy metal) cats if your car has a really picky emissions system, or if your car is being registered/smogged in CA or other super-strict locations.
