    5 speed swap horror SOLVED

Today I've added another 5 to 8 yrs onto my life.

I received a call from Sal @ Rennsport in Hackensack NJ and he finally solved the surging @ part throttle

after I had a 5 speed swap done.

You can read the original post and part of what I was up against from the beginning if you so desire.

    https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...ed-swap-horror.

So, two things were screwed up. One not horrible -- the pilot bearing that they installed

for the input shaft (not on an auto) fell out of the crank. Could be the wrong pilot bearing.

Sal scored the inside of the crank to give the bearing something to bite on and he added some

lock-tight as he slightly hammered the bearing in. I'm sure that vibration will not cause the bearing

to walk down the input shaft.

    NOW TH BIG FUCK UP!!!!!

The assholes never used the dowel to index the flywheel with the crank.

No dowel, indexed one hole off caused the timing to lose it's reference point.

Was fine @ WOT, I would guess that full advance disguised the problem.

I'm a happy camper. The MM tranny will be installed, the exhaust system will be reinstalled correctly.

I also called Lee @ Hybrid Motors who did the swap and I told him that one of his guy's screwed up.

He agreed to negotiate with me when I get Sal's final bill and help with some of the extra cost I had to lay out.

I just might have the six ready for Hershey on the 5th of Oct. weekend and "Idiotfest" 2017 on the weekend of (Oct Friday the 13th).

Ya think I should play the lottery with this good luck coming my way.

No -no-no, what the hell am I thinking, playing the lottery will just jinx something on the six.

I'll leave well enough alone and celebrate with a glass of Scotch and a nice corona cigar.

I'm so tickled to post this for you guys, hope it makes you feel a warm and fuzzy inside.

    Bob V

I should add a big THANK YOU to Jody and Fernando for spending a Saturday with me
going thru all the electrical troubleshooting confirming that the unnecessary rewiring was ok.

Congrats on finding a solution. Persistence pays dividends. Now, you can really enjoy that five-speed.

Hey great news!!! Glad you won't be in the E350 with the Roundel stuck over the three stars.

And, good that the shop is helping out. Seems you can negotiate pretty aggressively. After all, its already out here on the boards.

    Thanks Jeff---

Yeah, I'll have Roundels on the proper chariot.

When will you have the info on the Founders?

Happy news Bob! This tells me that the ECU can in fact provide a very wide adjustment in timing when needed. One hole off is more than 10 degrees on the timing. I'm surprised it even started and idled. That was the head scratcher right there.

    Jody,

I also twisted my head left & right asking "How the hell

could it run with the timing that far out of whack"

Hope to see you in RI.
