Cool Rebuilding the Ate Brake Master Cylinder

I changed out My brake Master to Cardone when pressure went down, recently, I found the new remanufacture kits for the Ate Aluminum and Cast Iron versions. This takes about 5 minutes to remanufacture the internals once its out of the car. Rebuild is using old parts nothing old is used in the internals. Fren make seal kits for these,,no new springs included and other goodies.

I have the Ate Aluminum Version more expensive than the Cast Iron version at least last time I checked.

1.) Remove the circlip from the end of the Tandem Brake Master Cylinder
2.) Remove- pull on the shaft and one piece of the tandem brake master will come out complete.
3.) With 10 mm wrench remove the bolt on the side while depressing the second piece of the tandem brake master, now it can be removed.
4.) Coat the new assembly seals with red rubber grease or brake assembly grease and the bore(mine is clean no scratches, rust , ect).
5.) Push in and hold the second piece of the tandem brake master and screw in the bolt with new washer provided so it holds the second piece in under spring pressure(dont screw in to the grooves or you have no pressure for that brake circuit).
6.) Push in the 1st piece of the tandem brake master and put back in the new circlip provided in its groove.

Takes about 5 minutes and then good as new. New remanufacture kit from Ate is topside in pictures and comes with all new seals, ect. Cost $35.00--now-$15 plus change 02/07/20.. New Aluminum Ate about $200. PM me if you want the kit and I'll direct to the seller--includes shipping, whether he'll rise the prices or not is anybody's quess. Early Bird gets the Worm I could feel the pressure difference from the seals on both working with them, new ones higher pressure-harder to push in even greased with new springs of course. Put your old internal Assembly in the tube provided, keep it as a souvenir or chuck it, lol.

Nice write up, looks straightforward and probably well worth the effort since our cars are not getting any younger. PM'd you for info.

These cars original equipment in the brake and clutch hydraulic systems area 100 % Ate or near that.. Ate encourages rebuilding all there goodies BMW as well,,lol... I like that and the BMW goodies.. I just bought BMW NOS Clutch Slave,, they have a $100 plus or minus price tag from what I seen,,, I paid $17--priority mail inbound... I'll probably remove all and put back in all BMW and Ate new and rebuilt as time marches on exceptions do exist..

I like saving a few bucks here and there too, yet I like original as well.

the Ate kit above also comes with a new seal that seals the brake master to the brake booster--vacuum assist, its in the picture and instructions included as well.

Another pm answered and link sent,, USPS Priority Mail was shipping to me.. This Guy seems to have tons of Ate goods. Doing some research it appears that Ate Brake master + Reservoir is $300 plus new when available. ATe 03.2120-1362.3 is the aluminum brake master 20.64mm and from what I have found is used in E21's 1573ccm -2316ccm, 1573ml-2316ml or 1.573L-2.316L.

Thanks Robert, I just ordered a pair of new Ate grommets, after cleaning the reservoir and install the new grommets coated with red rubber grease and install the reservoir, it will be good to install when installed brake master loses pressure due to aged worn seals and spring pressure going down hill.

Cleaned the reservoir with pressure washer ,installed new Ate Grommets and reservoir--coating all with red rubber grease.

A few questions have come up whats OEM here ? Ate is OEM and was original factory installed,, Ate reservoir has the BMW Logo embossed on it, thus a period correct 320i has all Ate brake lines, Calipers,Wheel Cylinders, Brake and Clutch Masters Cylinders and Slave cylinder, Front Rotors,Brake Drums and Brake booster,, the entire hydraulic system is Ate for period correct. Ate is not cheap, yet make rebuild kits for nearly all--except maybe the Brake booster-yet it must be somewhere.

Ate is more expensive yet is period correct. BMW dealership parts usually have more than one vendor and can differ from factory installed. For example BMW group parts--presently Clutch slave is FTE, before ATE ,FAG(1905 On July 29, the FAG brand is registered with the patent office in Berlin, which stands for Fischers Aktien-Gesellschaft) and others.

Fischer AG (FAG) is a bearing company and has a huge market share and probably many German made Bearings taper, ect come from them and are rebranded. SKF is the largest,,FAG and INA 2nd largest owned by Schaeffler group,,Luk Clutches and so forth.

Randy, What's the metal nut-like piece in the bag with the two nuts? My original doesn't have one on it.

Some cars needed an adapter to fit a brake line , its an extra piece , mine have an extra piece too that was not needed .

I just found new Ate aluminum brake master for E21's, 20.64 ,, $243 dollars plus shipping from England and that's with 19% off for so many hours, regular $289 plus shipping, Aluminum Ate is rare, Cast Iron is not.
