You can't get the grill out without breaking it if the hood is stuck closed :/

Basically it needs to be banged in, which breaks the clips

If your careful enough you can slip some zip ties on the tabs to remove the grill.

I've done it without breaking but one clip. Use of some fine flat screwdrivers and 90 degree pick. You determine where the clips are, work it gently. It has been a while, I think I wedged the pick between the grille and the ring, they do come unclipped. Don't give up. Once you get them off, you will have to use the 90 degree pick to pull the latches. Start with the passenger side, you can see part of the cable, upper section of the opening where the grill used to be, but on the rear side, stick the pick in that hole where the cable is, about an inch in, spin the picks angled end down, pull, that should get that latch. On the drivers side, same thing, only you will have to push to open the latch, good luck, and have fun, but don't give up.You can do it.

Well turns out my hood release cable snapped right at the handle. So my new question is how to replace that cable now

Use vice grips to pull on what is left of the cable to open hood. Cable comes in 2 pieces. Once hood is open you will see where the cable splits about halfway down driver side fender. Then just follow it back to cabin.

Did the cable actually snap...or did the plastic handle break where the cable slips in?

Isn't there that technique using a block of wood and a hammer to remove the kidney grilles? I believe that there is a youtube video showing how to do it on an E38 - and that some have tried it with success.
