Hood Bonnet cable replacement but still no initial 'bonnet pop' when lever pulled

    Hi All
I've just replaced the complete bonnet (hood) release cable (both sections) and all went well. However I still need two people to release the bonnet. One to pull and hold the bonnet release lever in the vehicle and one to pull the catch outside the vehicle and lift the bonnet. Normally (in any vehicle I've seen), there is a small bonnet spring which 'pops' the bonnet when the release lever in the vehicle is pulled. I cannot find any bonnet spring attached to my E38 bonnet. Will someone have a look at their E38 to see what 'pops' the bonnet please? Thanks Paul

There's 2 rubber bump stops on either side of the radiator support that when new, have spring loaded pins that lift the hood up when you pull the hood release. They also adjust the hood height. Factory calls them buffer stop with ejector. Part number is51248187291

    Many thanks from Dublin

I had noticed the bump stops but didn't appreciate that there were integrated springs.

    Really appreciate you responding
    Thanks

Ditto...make sure the ejector is working and not stuck (which can happen if dirt/dust/grime builds up...it can "cement" the ejector and prevent it from being able to pop up). It can also be adjusted upward if need be:

If the pin(s) are down, hold the outer rubber part and try turning the pin anti clockwise a quarter turn with a phillips bit -if it pops up, then it was locked in the down position.

Great info, my bonnet doesn't 'pop' when I pull the release handle. I will look into this.

Update: I purchased two new ejectors from BMW and it's definitely a little better but still not a very satisfying 'pop'. I can barely discern that the bonnet has lifted. I tried adjusting the rubbers up and down etc

Its not intended to spring up like lesser cars - rather to release in a genteel, ladylike way just enough to use the grille lever...

Ditto chrisn7...when you pull the interior hood release...there's not a "satisfying pop"...but when you go around to the front of the car...you should see the hood release lever sticking out. If the spring for the lever is getting old and not satisfyingly "rising" to the occasion...then give the hood a slight "lift"...the lever should pop out from the grill...allowing you to get a good grip on it to release the hood and raise it.

Time to make a hood ejection system. Hydronic ram, linear actuator, something right

If the lever does not rise to the occasion as Q put it, it may be that a good clean is all that is required. The springs that push the lever out are not strong and old grease and oil definitely impedes things. There is quite a lot of adjustment available, so make sure that the lever does not catch on the grill slats as it flicks out.

I've tried three different ejectors over the years, and none of them provide the pop we're all want! Point is, our hoods are heavy.

Were our E38 hoods ever offered in aluminum, perhaps in a non-US market?? (see item #23 in below link, for 2 hood strut options: steel hood & aluminum hood).

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=41_0010

(and my hood doesn't "pop" up either, and that's with 2 new ejector springs. As others have mentioned, pulling the hood release only releases the hood latches just enough to extend the grill lever out)

Yes...yes they were. Between 11/95 - 9/98...the 750i (Europe) and the various 750iL models (USA & Europe) were offered with an optional aluminum hood. Good luck in finding them now...even if you have the original 11 digit BMW part nbr (see attachment below)...the new/updated part databases seem to "leave-out" this option which "ended" or hasn't been available since 1998. If you enter the actual/original 11 digit part nbr...you'll get info about the "steel" hood. BMW has seemed to wipe out any data about them...unless you kept old information from old discussions about the aluminum hood from about a decade or more ago.

Info below is from a 2011 post:

This site has a few differences versus Realoem.com in that it has a column that lists the weight...and it also allows you to "drill down" to an older part number (when its been succeeded). The succeeded part nbr is not as extensive as the BMW ETK version...but on many parts, it will go back at least one old part nbr. ...whereas Realoem may no longer have the info and you'll come up empty when searching using the old nbr.

Feel free to save the site to your favorites...as well as Realoem.

    Aluminum Hood (11/95-8/98 ~ pre-face lift e38 V12s imported to the USA) = 14.320 kg / 31.57 lb: http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E3...ounting_parts/

    Steel Hood (11/94-11/95 ~ pre-face lift e38 V12s imported to the USA) = 23.100 kg / 50.927 lb: http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E3...ounting_parts/

It seems the aluminum hood does make a difference. My E60 (with an aluminum hood) does have the "pop" when you pull the hood release.

If you don't mind just take that baby off you car and send it up to me

Seriously though, I am happy I caught this thread. I am disabled and there is no way I can pop the lever in the interior and lift the hood at the same time. I always need a second person. I am going to check this over and see if I can get mine in working condition. I was thinking that the cable had stretched and was not pulling the locking attachment properly. At least I can see if this will help. Thanks guys

    1. You can jam a piece of towel (or whatever) between the lever and the interior trim. If the lever is held open in that manner, the hood can be lifted.
    2. You might also ensure that the joints on the hood opening mechanism are clean and well lubricated. Every little bit helps.
