I think that depends on the system. In my experience most people seem to screw up MS installs or it gets 90% there and then they give up as soon as it drives.....then it never idles right or something needs to change for the idle controller, the base timing is wrong, it has intermittent connection problems, etc. There's something to be said for a drop in solution with the ignition/injector drivers, coolant sensors, IAT sorted out so you can just move on to getting it tuned.
If someone screws up wiring a standalone that badly, they need to just have a shop do all the work ($$$$$$$$). It's really not that hard, and there's lots of documentation out there to get started.
The only reason I'd require PnP on a standalone is if I needed an OBD2 inspection every year, but that also gets it hard to go really crazy with the hardware changes as well. You don't really want a full week's worth of wrenching to get it to where the stock ECU/DME can run things. But usually changing injectors and the MAF will do it.
To be honest, Id rather have a universal box. Makes adding circuits easier and your not restricted to an OEM pinout.

The whole idea of being plug and play is to swap in the factory ECU for inspection emissions.
Here in NYS, without an annual inspection, it causes a ton of problems. When your inspection expires and its time to re-register, they will not allow you to do so unless your car passes inspection. And nowadays with PD plate readers, you get tagged instantly. Seen it done numerous times.
While getting the inspection, even though a friends helps me out, the state computer gave me an issue because the window sticker did not match what the state computer reads in the ECU, making them question it. Causes all sorts of issues with my buddy inspecting it.
Now they just changed the law on window tint. NONE! Cant have any!
Gotta love New York!

If you're in a strict state for emissions and inspections, going standalone can suck to pass yearly tests. Plus needing 2 Cats etc, really restrict some of us. I know on my Supra I use an emulator but it's only for 1 code to be bypassed (to read like stock) For the rest I let the OEM ECU do the trick. It's fine up to the limits of the stock fuel system. All I run is a boost controller to limit the HP to 500 or so and I'm golden. The ECU may be 25 years old but it still learns and adjusts fuel and timing so I've never had any issues whatsoever. As long as I don't overboost past what my injectors are capable of I don't worry at all.

He used a OBD1 sensor and just swapped the plug type on the sensor side so its PNP to the obd2 harness.
