I have a 1992 BMW 850i M70 4hp24 automatic
I think my forward/reverse drum broke. I put it in reverse and started backing up then all the sudden it bucked and seemed like it went into park. Then i put it in D and car started making grinding noise until it switched to 2nd. After 2nd and up it runs fine but as soon as it gets to 1st the grind and slow speed. I was able to get it home very slowly but now it wont go forward or reverse. And when i turn car on and in park it makes grinding and loose metal noise.
1. Can i get the tranny from a 95 jaguar xj6 (4hp24), switch the bell housing and rear output shaft parts. Will it work? i feel this would be my cheapest and fastest option.
2. take tranny out and completely take it apart. Order rebuild kit around $300 to rebuild it completely? but i am afraid it is totally broken inside and will end up costing much more to fix it.
3. switch over to a 6-speed manual. I found a Getrag 420g for $400. I know i will need the pedals, master cylinder for the clutch, gear lever. What else wlll i need and can i get those parts from a 7 series or 540?
4. I was able to buy a rough looking 1995 bmw 750il M73 V12 with a Getrag 5hp30 transmission. But i can't seem to find anything about being able to swap the tranny into my 850
Any advice and direction would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys.
1. NO
2. Will cost way more than that. Way more
3. Not that easy, the 420g needs an adapter plate and blessings from a 3 eyed wizard - at the least
4. Again, NO
Your options are #2 if you really think you can pull it off... but be forewarned, it is way more involved than you think and you'll spend a lot
OR...
Buy a used one and hope for the best
OR
buy a completely re manufactured and upgraded transmission with a 3yr warranty from these guys... I searched the country for a re manufacturer (not a rebuilder) when the 4hp24 went bad in the Dinan 750TT... this is THE place.
www.peius.com
Herman "The German" has been doing this for 30yrs, and they have like 80,000 transmissions in the warehouse. Nobody else wants to spend any time on the old 4HP24's anymore.
Oh, and have somebody with a shop order it, you'll save like 20%

Cool, Thanks!
Manual swap can be done with an adapter plate for the V8 420G, on ebay for $300, all clutch bits can come from an E34 of any flavor.

Yes. Once the adapter is on it's like swapping a 560G. Shifts like a truck and cold second gear is cranky on 90% of them but they're fun to shift.

I've got a 5-speed from the V8 530i lying around, that's what I'm planning to use once I buy back "my" E32.

How committed are you to this car? It looks like it has quite a list but I would just have it rebuilt professionally. I had the transmission in my Mercedes rebuilt for $2200 and it drives like new with a 2-year warranty. It only took a few days.
