One thing to note... as your confidence level in working on your car goes up, you will eventually end up buying some speciality tools to replace certain parts, such as bushings.
On my E46, I had to buy 2 bushing removal tools to replace the 3 differential bushings on the subframe. I also just purchased a rear trailing arm bushing tool to replace those bushings. While the cost of the 3 tools total I bought were $80-$90 each, it is still cheaper to have the tool than pay for the repair at a shop.
