    Conversion to Evans Waterless Coolant

    Folks,

I have just bought a 2001 E38, quite excited about it! Thinking to convert it to Evans waterless coolant. Have noticed that previous owner had lot of issues with cooling system (from repair bils).
Since I have never done such I've asked an Evans authorized shop for price and they quoted $1,100 for it (everything included).
Isnt that extremely high? Curious to know what is normal range for the work.

    Thanks a lot!

    George

    Yes that is crazy expensive.

The 88*C t-stat is all you need. I actually used an OEM t-stat and had it recalibrated by a firm in TX. My car runs at ~92-104*C now depending on driving conditions. The upper radiator hose isn't nearly as rock hard as it used to be, and I regularly see 105-110*F on my dash with A/C blasting in the FL heat here. The best part is it still has the heating element in the thermostat, so the DME can control opening or closing it and doesn't throw a code.

lower Tstat and stock replacement coolant will not reduce system pressure......Evans will..

Operating temperature is why you need a colder stat....

bro, DIY....it's not that hard! buy yourself 4 gallons of Evans. do your normal cooling system refresh, refill with Evans, bleed properly, check after a few days, top off as needed. Soon whatever water was left in the system will have evaporated and you'll be good to go!

Original post was conversion to Evans not the purpose of a colder stat.....the biggest advantage is no system pressure otherwise go with the stat/coolant and save the $$$...

Otherwise you're risking running at 120C+ without the colder stat.

    Hot liquid damages gaskets.

There is no way around thermal expansion; the system will still be pressurized.

    $1,100?! For what, exactly?

I've had Evans (the same batch) in my car for probably 5 years now. I love it. If I open the cap there's a small hiss and that's it.

What's your operating temp with the M73N?

108-112C usually. 112 if I'm idling for a long time in the heat.

Running the engine at a lower temperature will reduce pressure. And significantly. The reason why the E38 has to run at 30 psi is because of the operating temp of the engine being well above the BP of water. Even though the 50/50 mix has a higher BP than water, it's not by much, so the system has to be pressurized to prevent boil over. Dropping operating temp 10-20 degrees C, significantly reduces the pressure needed to prevent boil over. I can squeeze my upper radiator hose when hot, whereas before it was hard as a rock. This also doesn't even mention the benefits to everything else from running a lower temperature.

Not discouraging using Evans...the pressure will be next to zero with that stuff. It's just expensive, a hassle to convert to, and you can't top it off or anything if you're on the road and develop a leak. I also do not think the heat transfer is as good as water. Nothing has the specific heat capacity of water.
