Every morning I start the car, all is good. I drive for 2 minutes to the gym and workout for an hour. I start the car and I get a P0021 code. I clear the code with my scanner and the code is gone for the rest of the day. It does this everyday, same sequence. Does this mean the Vanos seals are bad, bad solenoid, or CPS?
Anyone?
Chain guides starting to go

Oh yeah? I bought the motor from a guy that supposedly did this already. I think he is a member on this forum. Time to buy some timing tools and rebuilt vanos units.
That one is not always the guides. Seems like that code often pops up after the guides are done because it was not timed properly. You also swap the two cam sensors to see if the code changes. This will at least eliminate the sensor.
I'll try that tomorrow. For some reason I thought they were different lengths.
As Chuck said, this code seems to usually come from the timing being off after doing the guides.
Takes a few drive cycles to turn on the light for it which is why you only see it once a day.
+1 Clear code, start engine and the code will not reappear until you shut the car off and start the next time. Sounds like the driver side timing may be off, or the trigger wheel is just slightly off.
If you can get the crank to TDC, then you should be able to check the trigger wheel by removing the access near the cam shaft sensor and inserting the appropriate size drill bit directly into the alignment hole in the trigger wheel. See circle in pic
Awesome. I'll do that and check back. My Vanos units are kinda noisey so I may have to do something about them. Dr. Vanos possibly?
