I apologise in advance if there's a thread on this. I've been looking around but I cannot seem to find the answer im looking for. So I was driving my car home the other day from work and I had a buddy in the passenger seat for not even 3 minutes to drop him off, then after I drop him off I get about a mile and a half down the road and my seat belt and air bag light pop on. So I think to myself why the hell did this just happen. So I cycle the car when I get he thinking something tripped but that wasn't the case. So I go to my local shop and get it cleared and it's fine until someone sits in the seat again, but like I said it takes about 10-15 mins to come on, it's not instantaneous. It's cc ID 97. Im not sure what to look for or what this means. And would an emulator work to remove this problem or should I just replace what is broken? Im hoping I can just adjust a wire and do it myself without the huge bill. Thanks
I had the exact same issue in my 135i - most likely it's a sensor in the seat belt buckle or fuse that needs to be replaced. Worst case scenario it's the actual module that needs to be replaced.

You need to check for faults first
The problem I can't seem to wrap my head around is that when I get it cleared it doesn't come on, but as soon as someone sits in the seat, it triggers the lights. So how would that route back to being a seat belt problem and not a mat sensor?
It's the seat mat sensor. A seatbelt buckle issue won't turn on the restraint malfunction warning.
