Buying a CA. vehicle as an AZ resident - questions?

I moved to AZ earlier this year and I have found a car that I am interested in purchasing in CA. Can anyone tell me what the process is for a private sale in CA? Again the sale would be private from a CA resident (seller) to an AZ resident (purchaser) and the title is in the sellers hands with no lien.


Do I have to register the vehicle in CA in order to drive it home to AZ?


Is there a temp registration or tag for this available in CA.


Do I have to pay CA sales tax to the seller or to the DMV when I register it in CA, or do I just drive it to AZ and then register it and pay their taxes?


There is a lot of conflicting info in this and I am finding a hard time finding an answer from the seller or on the net. I would hate to get it back to AZ and then have the title all delayed and messed up.

Check with AZ first; you may be able to get a temporary transit license so that you can just register it in AZ when you get it there.

If the car is currently registered in CA then you don't need to do anything. Drive it home to AZ and take the CA title to your DMV. You'll have your new AZ title and plate the same day. Super easy! No bill of sale needed, no reason to pay CA DMV for anything.
