Treated the old girl to some new gas struts yesterday, as the originals were getting a bit tired....they would hold the hood up but offered no real assistance in raising it, and one seemed a lot weaker than the other.
New ones now raise the hood unassisted from around shoulder height to full open.
A calibrated broomstick is all you need to support the bonnet/hood when changing the struts!

Cheap insurance to avoid getting bonked on the head by a heavy hood, too! Do you guys call it a "hood" in NZ? I would have thought it would be called the "bonnet" on all RHD models.
BTW, you must post the specs on the calibration of the broom. It looks to be very precise and I would not want to screw that up

Yep, we call it the bonnet - but BMW call it the 'hood' in their parts catalog!
Will get broom specs to you at a later date!
