Pretty bad leak from auto transmission

See pictures. I just got this car, working on suspension rebuild and just noticed this puddle on floor and traces on what I believe shifter mechanism? I wonder if this is what they talking about here in this topic?

    https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...-Seal-Leak-Fix

Also, why it seems that everyone uses this photobucket that doesn't work?? Can't see any pictures.

Everyone used photobucket, but they recently changed their system and 3rd party hosting costs now $399.99 !!!! https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...otobucket-Died
This shows you the procedure on a ZF trans, same procedure http://bmwe32.masscom.net/dutch740/s...ectorshaft.htm

Looks like it is 12x20x5mm seal according to RealOEM. $17 cheapest when searched by PN
Searching by size I found some double-lip seals for $5 shipped, assuming thats a way to go?

I did that last month on my E32 750 ZF 4HP24, used the BMW part number and found cheaper ones than from the dealer. Double lip seal sound good.
Buy a spare one too, I destroyed 2 when installing on the sharp edges of the shaft, then I used masking tape and that helped to install the seal without damage, removed the masking tape after the seal was in place.

for some models the seals come in a kit like this, which is of course better than my masking tape trick, https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...e/24501423606/
maybe you can make such a plastic sleeve DIY for your 24101218852, the white plastic part is to insert into the new seal before installation to prevent damage to the seal as it moves over the shift shaft. after the seal is driven in place, remove the protective sleeve and you are done. Lubricate the white piece wit ATF before sliding the seal on.

Hm. Your link doesn't show anything. But I got an idea.I think electric tape will be better "more slippery" than masking tape. Will see. Just don't understand how so much oil can drip through the top part, maybe previous owner over-filled tranny?

Go to DIY section of e34 forum, I have a DIY on this subject, but the fix is really involved, unless you get lucky and can get the old one out without having to rotate the trans.

Will see. I have lathe so I can fabricate something to aid retreival and install. I've seen your DIY and I think it's doable on a car as is with a tool, maybe will buy and modify GM seal tool

I'm not so sure about 5sp now. I have 6sp M3, this if my first automatic actually, in my 18 years of driving. So, I may keep it the way it is for a while. Need it to work for at least another year, my daughter need to learn how to drive.

RTV/Hondabond doesn't seem as real solution..

It isn't, it's a hack if you didn't feel like going through the labor when a swap was imminent. It's what I did to the M70 when the upper pan gasket decided to kill itself, holding up for over a year now.

Apparently you can't just drop the pan and pop a pin to remove the shaft on the GM.

I guess you are lucky Did you just degrease and cover seam with RTV?

I will come up with a way to remove/install seal. Installing will be super easy as I can machine proper sleeve that goes over shaft.

Speaking of this GM tranny, what oil does it take? Any speciality/preference or any regular Walmart oil? Since I'm going to add oil and maintenance history unknown(they said they changed oil, but I don't know about filter) - I may just go ahead and drop pans, replace gaskets and filter.

    Wal-Mart dex3.

Yes. Degrease and smear, grand total of 12 minutes.

Hm.Does it sound right? Bentley manual says Dexron II (not Dex3) at 8.2qt if I remove both sumps.

Is Dex3 compatible or I should look for Dexron II?

Spent 4 hours dealing with this stupid seal
Took so long because I had to machine 3 different versions of "tool". Last one worked great.
There is enough clearance to push tool INTO the seal (using prybar). Once it's in - it "clicks". Then I turn "tool" 90 degrees and then I use wrench to hold this tool and push it out with prybar. Worked great.

Putting new seal didn't work all that great. I have exact bushing to push it in. I was able to carefully put seal on. Even pressure around, etc. It just want's to "bite" on outside of a seal. Maybe this ebay seal is not exactly right one (metric, correct size). So, I wiped 2nd one with RTV and just drove it in. Some rubber on outside shaved off, but I think it will be just fine. About 1/8 of a rubber left and there is RTV. Main thing - inner lips is good. If no drips by tomorrow - I'm good. BTW, old seal was angled in a channel. Not sure if it was replaced before me or what. But it was hard.

Next time with this tool it would take probably 10-15 minutes..
