BMW 850i AC blowing mix of hot and cold

I have a 92 850i. AC was blowing ice cold.No issues with the controls. One day it just started acting up. The system blows hot air when on "Auto", regardless of the temperature setting. When pushing the knobs for manual control, the center vent blows a mix of cold and hot air. The temperature of the air keeps changing back and forth and sometime it feels as if the lower side of the vent is blowing colder than the top side!!

I checked the gas. the pressure gauge is on "green". The compressor is engaging withiut an issue and it shuts off when the system is turned off.

The unit will "allow" warm air into the cabin when the AC/Heater is shut off.

I'll appreciate feedback and possible causes.

The little flap actuators attached to the heater core housing are likely the culprit. The brackets they attach to tend to break and then they don't open or close the air flow flaps properly.
