2001 M5 randomly loosing power under load!

Well my father went out to drop of someone at the airport in LA and took the M5. He called me a bit ago informing me that he was driving down the 10 freeway in the fast lane and out of nowhere the car started loosing power. He described that whle merging over that the car was difficult to shift or accelerate and when he stopped the car it died like it wasn't getting fuel. He said the gas was pretty low but the fill-up light was not on. He waited a bit and then tried to crank it again and he said it was almost as if nothing was wrong, so along came highway patrol and they did their free gas thing and he drove off to a nearby gas station and filled up. My M5 has a custom Dinan chip installed and the fuel pump was replaced last year. Also it should be noted that this car seldom gets driven during the summer because it's so hot where we live, but it seems like the car has lost a little bit of power over the last three months.
He's driving the car back right now, fingers crossed that he makes it back in one piece.

Any similar issues experienced by anyone? I know that sometimes e39 ecu messes up so I'm not too suprised by this.

Pull the stored codes and see what's going on - this should give you a pretty definitive answer.

Early stages of fuel pump failure will have that 'fading' feeling.
Try special menu #6 and see If the fuel transfers from the left tank to the right tank. FWIW the right tank should stay mostly full.
Depending on the mileage I'd be replacing the fuel filter and in-tank pump. This cured my issue.
Look for my thread about Fuel Trims for detailed information about the pump I chose [if you want to save $$ , or order a OEM pump from Pelican .. they ship fast!]
