So a quick look reveals that the previous owner put make a gasket putty like material in there and it's all cracked and brittle, I just ordered a new gasket. This car gets more and more interesting! Do you think this leak would cause the MAF to flutter like it did?

Certainly,as that would be considered a large or major intake leak.
Glad to help, doesn't hurt to spread the knowledge I've learned over the years.
Btw, clear the codes after you've finished the install, and before you start her up.
If possible reset adaptations, if you have BMW software/tool. I'll wait for your update!
Here is a stomp test refresher:
1) Turn ignition to Run (not start)
2) Wait for the EML light to go out.. <1 sec
Then.. Do this 5 times (In less than 5 seconds):
3) Press the accelerator all the way to the kick down button for about 1/4 second and release
If you did it right, CEL will blink once, then blink out your code(s). After the code(s) it will pause and repeat the codes.
Even if you have no codes, it should still blink out 1 4 4 4 . If you can't get it, turn the key back off for a few seconds and try again.
Then...
Shut everything off, and repeat the test, but press it 6 times to read codes out of the second DME.
All codes originating from DME #2 should start with 2 flashes
Good Luck!
Crank case vent valve is just behind that area too and they leak sometimes too.
How do I block you ?? LOL
Ok, so I'm fresh meat to the forums. But I have 15 years with BMW. I guess he didn't notice my feedback and activity on this forum. But it's people like him that make me mind my own P's and Q's and not come on here unless I have a problem and need help. And if you look in my activity, it's not very ofen that I need advice.
I appreciate the help finding the ignore button.
