Hey guys,
I bought a 2001 X5 with a 3.0 M54 that I replaced the head gasket on. First time working on a BMW. I had the head inspected, rebuilt, and machined by reputable shop and per their recommendation I used a thicker head gasket. The block was nice and clean too.
Sometime after starting it I saw oil drops on the corner from where the engine meets the transmission, on the passenger side. I inspected the valve cover gasket with a mirror and it seems dry.
I'll attach a picture to show where I'm seeing oil. My question is, is there anything else in this area that could leak and make it seem like head gasket? Looking at the picture of the block, there isn't even an oil passage near that corner, but all I see is fresh, clean oil, no coolant. Any help would be greatly appreciated
Not my image, but shows the corner where oil collects and drops down
Welp, removed the bracket for the o2 wires on the back of the head to get a better look and found a little plug in the head itself. After inspecting it saw oil on the bottom.
It wasn't loose but wasn't that tight either, wonder if machine shop had to remove it for something?
Tightened it down some more and all is good now
