I have 1996 z3. engine surges back and forth 800 to 1000 rpm, probably more by the sound of it, but this is what the gauge shows), only when warm engine and not all the time. Sometimes the computer "finds" the right info and settles in at 700. It never happens when the engine is cold. I cleaned the auto idle control valve, then replaced it with no effect. When I unplug the wires from the valve, the engine runs slower about 700 rpm but a little rougher and no surging. There is no surging when the accellerater is depressed, only at idle, only when the enginde is warm, and it's intermittent. What do i check next? Someone said the fault is in the computer. How do I fix that?
Wrong forum.
You need to read the computer codes associated with the check engine light, if on... That's what they meant.
You likely have a vacuum leak from torn rubber boot/intake tract.

Adjust the throttle plate further open. Someone adjusted it already because of the low idle while unplugged. It will surege more and more and then it will stop surging. The CEL sends it to an alternate map so you may have to adjust then clear the light and adjust again. It will feel wrong until it snaps in to shape.
