I have 8v on pin 8 and 0v on pin 7 ? Anyone know what this can be ? I can also only read the dme .
I've spent months now working this issue - reading forums/etc. I really hope you can help me.
I have a 2001 BMW E39 M5 that refuses to start after a very dead battery caused the immobilizer to engage. The NAV system is now asking for a 4 digit code but the Emergency override count-down is stuck due to some unknown reason. I even tried walking through all 0000-9999 codes - no luck. I don't wish that on anyone. I've tried the "pull the battery, wait, reconnect, turn to position 1, etc" - no luck. Emergency timer is stuck at 9:59.
I began by connecting my BMW Scanner (1.40) via the under-the-hood PAC-MAN connector and I found I as unable to connect to anything but the DME.
I notice I had gotten moisture in the drivers side wheel well and the x183 block was corroded - which would explain the loss of one of the K-lines (pin 8). I'm now able to communicate to the ABS and LEW modules - but that's it. No ability to talk to the IKE - where I could attempt to find out why it's not allowing the count-down to take place. BMW Scanner is reporting "CAN timeout, instrument cluster". I do understand that most of the remaining modules live behind the cluster - and that's why I'm not seeing any of those modules reporting.
I checked voltage on the diag port under the hood and I'm seeing 12V on pin 20 now - but under 1V on pin 17 (which I believe is TX II)
I'm struggling where to go from here. Read that a bad module could be pulling pin 17 down - but I'm not sure how to systemically disconnect each module in turn. I've also considered that my cluster could be bad - but hesitant to go this path as I would have to reprogram the cluster.
Appreciate any ideas/thoughts - I'm stuck.
Same case tham me, mw e39 530d 2001, ITS INCREDIBLE GERMAN ENGENEERS FIT A BUS CROSSOVER IN THE LOWER PART OF THE CAR.
THAN U VERY MUCH, THIS POST WAS VERY HELPFULL BECAUSE OTHERWISE MY CAR WOULD GO VERY PROBABLY TO JUNKYARD, THE CROSSOVER WAS VERY VERY HIDDEN
THANKS A LOT.
This sounds like my car as well, 1999 528iT. I can read the engine and transmission modules but that's it. Everything in the car works, just can't see any of the other modules. The cluster has been replaced, and voltage is present on pins 7 and 8 on the underhood diagnostic connector.

But i hadnt current on pin 8, my problem just solved was pin 8, due to corroded and broken wires, anyway check if your carpet is/was wet at anytime and look for corroded wires, its very rare to have a broken module
After checking my car I find that I power on pins 7 and 8 but no power on pin 20. I have 3 E39s on the property in addition to mine at the moment and all show power on pin 20.

Freeair Is this your video? I checked mine has the same wires loose how are they supposed to go? I can’t connect with anything other than dme and transmission as well

I can confirm RHD cars, the junction is still on the right side.
My e39 m5 has exactly same problem however when I had a look on the junction, it is clean as new, so not the issue of my case. Any thoughts?
I made this quick video to show the x183 connector and how I accessed and fixed it. It seems like it's on the left side footwell when you're sitting in the car on both rhd and lhd cars. Hope it helps.

I have a 2000 e39 m5 and noticed that I can only communicate with the DME modules using the obd port inside the cabin and that communication with the other modules is only possible using the 20 pin connector in the engine bay. This makes it impossible to look at chassis data while I’m driving the car, no wheel speed or abs live data is available inside the cabin using the inside obd port. Is there something wrong with my port or is this a feature of m.y. 2000 m5’s?
I have a 2003 540iT and I am unable to communicate using INPA or ISTA but I can communicate with DME & transmission using a Creader or AUTEL. I must add that I have changed my cluster to one from an M5. Where do I start to troubleshoot? Below is breakout box results. Surprised there is no data from pin 7 but there is from pin 8.

Take a look at noorshah96's video. It sounds like you may have the same problem, I know I did. Didn't matter which diagnostic system was used, up to and including the dealer system nothing could be read except DME and Transmission modules. In any event investigating noorshah96's option will only cost you some time.

Granted, I wanted to explore all possibilities before i yanked the seat out.

I wanna thank everyone on this thread for this valuable information.
Same issue, x183 connector corrosion, connected all the white+pirple wires together and soldered them, everything reads from the obd port.
