I have an m60 engine from e38 740i with 2 pin knock sensors (12141702163) attached to it, on an e34 with 530i wiring, that has 3 pin sockets for these sensors (12141736303). From what I have read, is that 3 pin sensors are basically just 2 pin ones with protective shielding being the third pin.
Is the third pin (the shield one) grounded to the car, or is there something else?
Can I just skip the one shielding pin and install my 2 pins and would the ecu note any difference?
I don't really feel like removing the intake manifold and buying new sensors unless old ones are toast which they shouldn't be.
Three wires, labelled as 1,2 and 3, yellow being the number one. Also the 2 socket sensor has numbers on pins. So if they should work without the need of this shielding pin connected to anything I could remove the wall beside the pin 2, to get the sensor in place.

Hi,
Do post this in the engine conversions section as it's nothing to do with Car Audio and associated electronics. Some excellent members there with more knowledge of this kind of thing!
Cheers, Dennis!
Posted it to engine conversions.
