I checked out this 96 318ti. Owner wants 500$ and claims it has been sitting for a year and the only problem it has is the belt tensioner needing to be replaced. The car has flat tires which im not sure if they are punctured or not. Owner also claims the head has been rebuilt. The car is also AUTO and has 160k. A lot of stuff in the engine bay is also not installed but comes with the car such as the radiator, fan shroud, etc. I'm looking into a first car and a DD so im not sure if i should go for this as i do not have much experience working on much cars but im willing to learn. Should i go for it?
If they say there are 5 things that need doing, there are at least 5 more things that need doing to make it driveable. If you're looking you make it daily, it'll be twice that. You'll end up spending at least a grand and it'll only last you another couple years. I'd spend that money on something that'll work off the bat. It'll last you longer. One man's opinion
For a first car/daily it would be a horrible choice. Get something that's actually put together and reliable for a first daily.
The flat tires will have flat spots and mad cracks from sitting forever like that so you'd have to buy all new tires etc.
Just skip it.
If you want to learn, it might be an OK choice, especially with all of the DIY videos available. Make sure that you have a knowledgeable, capable person who can show you and lend a hand...wrench, etc...for when things get out of control. It could make a good project car to accompany a reliable daily driver as well. Good luck regardless! :-)
