I went through and replaced all 5 capacitors in my dash to try and fix the screen issue. Unfortunately it did not work but ended up fixing my issue with all 3 back lights not working. Does anyone have any insight as to why my dash is still an 80s disco when hot? I also never hear any gongs from either the dash or the underside speaker which has caused me to leave my lights on more than once, thoughts?
Usually the cap issue is related to cold. Did you re-flow ALL the solder at inter-connects and connectors? I worked on my dash once to replace lamps and even though I was careful, a connector ended with with cracked solder joints. My display was all funky. Reflowed everything I could on the cluster and its been fine since.

In 2008 my wrenching buddy resoldered the cluster here at the pins http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/569942/
As unity says: re-flow ALL the solder.......

I went through and re-did all the solder points on the main board to no avail. How hard is it to get the board/screen out to check the soldering on it?

Im not quite sure what im looking for in those. What is odd is that before and after the capacitor replacement I can get in and sometimes it'll works perfectly fine for about 2 minutes (sometimes more sometimes less). Then the oil life indicator goes dark then it goes blank and I get all kinds of random lines of pixels moving up and down the screen. Occasionally it'll come back and work fine for another minute then go back into the dancing pixel state. I know its being fed information about my brake sensors and a CCM error about the suspension leveling that I don't have.
That means you have a problem with the check control indication. That is a different story.
Search for: bmw pixel repair kit BMW E32, ot get another cluster with same back plate, then you can swop the data chip

It looks like my only option is to swap the LCD as the only clusters I found were gen 2, how difficult is the old one to take out?
Never done it. Maybe easiest you get a 740 cluster and swop the chip in the back side to the new one, then you have the VIN and mileage transfered into the new cluster.
Your cluster should have a blue back plate http://www.exx.se/maintenance/instru...34/index.shtml

I found a few of the gen 2 clusters on ebay which if I understand correctly the chips should be able to be switched. I also found a late 89 735i at the junkyard which would save quite a chunk of change if the 735 and 740 share the same instrument items.
late 90 would be white back plate and the chip has a different shape compared to the blue version, so not interchangeable. Also talk size might be different.
Application date.... Back plate colour... Code plug type... Size.... Extra information
start ->02/89................ Grey.......... .....HML 075..... 2048 bytes........ No self test or diagnosis via Modic. Stops at 299960. code plug is non-standard
02/89 -> 09/90............ White............ PIC 93C46..... 1024 bytes ...............Self test + diagnosis via Modic. Code plug is standard EPROM
09/90 -> end ................Blue............. PIC 93C56..... 2048 bytes............... Self test + diagnosis via Modic. Code plug is standard EPROM
in the cluster chip the following data are stored (German language)
1. Gesamtwegstrecke km/miles
2.
SI-Stand
SI-Zeit
SI-Grenzwerte
3. Code-Nr. des Codiersteckers
4. Verbrauchskennlinie
5. Wegimpulszahl
6. US/ECE -Ausfuehrung CC III
7. Tank /5 Stuetzpunkte (Liter/Anzeigewerte)
8. Kuehlwasser-Temperaturanzeige/Stuetzpunkte
9. Kuehlwasseruebertemperaturgrenze
10. Grenzgeschwindigkeit (Limit)
11. Ton-Trigger-Ausfuehrung
12. Reserveraum fuer Fahrgestellnummer
13. Zylinderzahl
14. Programmanzeige ausblenden
15. Landessprache CC III
16. Gesamt-KM-Zaehler-Offset
17. Programmkonstanten
so you can see that even the number of cylinders is in the chip and then the fuel consumption would be incorrect, temperature points etc pp.
Best is you get one from the same model type.

I ended taking the LCD out of a junkyard 92' 735i and the transplant into my instrument cluster was succesful, where do I start with finding the issue with no gongs? I have the speaker at the bottom and both the connectors are in it. Is it normal for the oil service indicator to turn off a few seconds after engine start, I left the key in engine off for 20 minutes to test the LCD and everything stayed on until I started it.
Yes the oil service indicator goes off after a startup.

Sweet, thanks. Now that I have fixed the LCD I get the error suspension leveling when I do not have the self-leveling suspension. Another error would be the check control error, I have cleaned all the contacts in the CCM and the instrument cluster but not the OBC. The last error is the brake light circuit error, I have cleaned all the contacts on the rear brake lights but I am still seeing the error.
E34 M5s have that issue, but the i shouldn't have a height sender unit.
CCM lost a ground on those two pins.

When I first got the error with the intermittent LCD i tried looking for any of the SLS components and couldn't find any. The only commonality is that mine uses the Pentosin 11s. Where are the grounding points located so I can chase wires for breaks and clean the grounds.

I decided to swap in a CCM from a junkyard car with matching part numbers and it showed me 2 things for sure, the check control message went away and no amount of mashing the brake pedal would trigger the brake light circuit error error. I didnt leave it run long enough to test the suspension error. I took the CCM inside and found it did have 2 places of cracked solder down by the connector. Thanks for all the help!
You can resolder the defective CCM when there are problems, here is a detailed German instruction with pics where the important parts are to resolder http://www.e34-welt.de/tips_tricks/R...0e34%20e32.pdf
