Anyone know what this mesh filter is from? I was removing my radiator and after draining all of the coolant from the radiator and expansion tank (along with upper and lower radiator hoses) I found this in my catch pan. I have no idea where this is from.. it might not even be from the cooling system and could have just fallen into the catch pan as i was removing the radiator..
Maybe its some kind of coarse filter from a fill can they used at the factory!?
Attn. NEWBIES: Use the search feature, 98% has already been discussed.
Click the search button, select "search single content type", select the "e36 sub forum" specifically, try the "search titles" then try the "search entire posts".
Hopefully it wasn't floating around in my cooling system..
It's not a part of the car that I recognize. It's of no consequence that it fell out. If it came from something you need, you would have needed it by now.
Could be a VANOS filter.
M50/M52 do not have it, as the oil is directly coming from the oil filter.

Shogun tricks and tips for the E32 series are HERE!
Looks like a fill cartridge from a spill-free funnel. Lisle and several other manufacturers make these with caps for common radiator tanks. You screw the funnel on with various adapters based on the car/tank model and you can quickly fill and bleed the system with the engine running. That filter piece slots into the spill free radiator cap and the funnel pushes down into it. If it is one, it probably dropped into the overflow tank or maybe one of the large hoses when attempting to fill the block with coolant.
have you done any maintenance or repairs to the windshield washers lately? Looks like a washer fluid filter to me.

Yes, I also saw this filter somewhere under the hood, but I don't remember where exactly
Just thought I'd update this thread with some more pictures!
In case anyone was curious what that filter was for..
Rubber grommet from washer reservoir (where the washer pump goes):

Don't want to get any pesky dirt in my washer pump or nozzles!
Mikeysentra was correct.
I don't recall having ever seen a filter there.
There is a strainer on the fill opening.

That is an aftermarket grommet. This is the BMW part for that grommet/gasket:
If yours was OEM, I would've known about it.

On most cars the strainer is long gone, or floating inside.

The E46 version. One piece. Separate strainer is just asking for problems.

Someone posted this filter on his E46 car.
