Paint day is in 3 days. I'm either choosing Jet Black or Cosmo Black Metallic.
Which one is better? What are the pros and cons of each?
I will base my decision off of this thread.
Please post pictures as well.
Jet cause I have Cosmosschwarz Metallic and good luck trying to find any used body panels in the same paint color, should you need them one day that is.

I kinda partial to Cosmo too! You get that cool metallic in bright sunlight and gloss black in the shade, plus it hides the dirt a little better.
Jet
Anyone know how hard it is to maintain the two? Which one will look better for longer?
My vote is still for Jet though

Can't you do other blacks/dark colors? Petrol Mica, for example, is really nice.
I plan on getting my E38 repainted this summer as well since the previous owner had a bad job done (wavy paint work) as well as lots of chips and scuffs here and there. My original paint is cosmosschwarz metallic. I'm thinking of doing either the original cosmosschwarz metallic or jet black, but my only concern with jet black is how much of a difference will be seen with the panel gaps and grooves that won't be painted? Will it be very noticeable?
Doubt you would even notice at all. Black is fairly forgiving.
Cosmos Black is really hard to keep looking clean, the fine metallic particles makes the paint look dusty!

Not clear what your current color is, but a repaint in the original color is likely to be the most successful. I have 2 Jet Black cars, but it was not by design
I have cosmosschwarz right now. Hmm, Clarktiect mentioned I would hardly notice a difference in color. Would jet black show a huge difference in the door panel areas from your experience? The only differences between the two are metal particles in one, no?
I might just go with jet black then. Like Timm mentioned, the metallic makes it look dusty from close up, even when clean. Side skirts, lower front and rear bumpers will also be fully painted instead of the stock black plastic look.
jet is the best

JET BLACK
Also - Timm... thanks for the reply / info regarding the sunvisors -

I have a Jet car, and I hate it more than anything, that being said with fresh paint and then polished correctly I think it would be a fantastic color.

Reviving the thread again. My paint day might be sooner than expected since I have done a lot of work on the E38 and seem to be ahead of schedule. From what I gathered from this thread and other E39/E46/E36 threads is that cosmosschwarz hides the scratches, swirls, and dust better than jet black which is a big plus! But, it isn't a black-hole black like the jet black (schwarz II). I've only seen an E39 in jet black a month ago at a parking lot and thought it looked really deep in darkness, almost like the old Mercedes onyx black color. I can imagine that there is more work on jet black, but that is the price to pay for a car to look gangster. Still torn between the two (first world problems right?)
My vote as a cosmos owner is, cosmos!
The e39 in jet black you looked at, M5 or regular 5 series?
Only the M5 is jet black. All regular e39's are Schwartz ll, which is very brown.
Plus, in every body style, there were significantly fewer cosmos, so it's more exclusive, if being different matters.
It was a regular 528i. I am not sure if it was repainted or not. I thought schwarz II is jet black since it is the same code (668)?
668 is Schwartz II / Jet Black. I have 2 of them. Not by design, but I have a small club of black / black bmws. The 99 540iT is not brown in any light.
