    Hardtop window gasket replacement.

SoI have a hardtop, painting silver was originally green.
The paintjob was poorly done and the window gasket has silver over spray.

I noticed that you can purchase a new gasket, has anyone tried removing their hard top glass and replacing one of these before?

Also found a weather strip, maybe I dont need to remove the glass

Trying to figure if it's the weather strip or the seal itself.

Removing it isn't terribly hard. Getting the new one back in is a kind of a chore, though. If you're replacing it, you can just cut a slit in the old one the tear it out. It just sits in the channel between the fiberglass and the window with friction holding it in place.

The new one goes in place as a "ring", so it needs to be stretched into place and then tucked into the space around/under the window. I have one of the bone tools that BMW includes with their soft top window kits, and it was helpful for tucking the gasket back in, since it is largely non-marring.

    Thanks.
Can you tell from my photo. Do I just need the trim?

The black rubber bit is just trim. If you have overspray on it that you can't otherwise clean off, that's the only part you'll need.

If it's at all possible to clean the overspray off, though, I'd recommend that you try. It's going to be a pain to replace.

I just replaced the trim on mine yesterday. No tools needed. You do not remove the glass. It was very easy. The trim just pushes in with finger tip. I did use a bit of WD40 to lube the trim and I had laid it out in the sun to warm up before I started.
Just center the seam on the bottom and work around until you are at the top. You'll need another pair of helping hands to help stretch and work around the window. Had it done in less than 5 minutes.

Beyond hope...look I’ll do you a favor and take that sorry hard top off your hands...

Actually I agree that replacing the outer rubber window seal is pretty easy.

I've used very fine steel wool to remove overspray from rubber and it works quite well. Just use some water to help lubricate things and of course don't touch the paint with it.
