Hey guys - I am in the process of restoring my 840 after it has been sitting for several years in Florida.
My mechanic thought the fuel pump had an issue but now it he is saying there is likely a problem with the ignition control module.
A replacement for this i see on ebay is $2k! i see one for a 1997 for $866 -
im not a gearhead at all so am a little clueless as to how to vet a course of action - is there a place that can repair it? (I know this has been done for the general module before) Is there a better place to source this?
Please advise!
I look forward to posting pics when shes finally with me up in NYC! (I would also love to meet local owners in this area and get tips on mechanics! I can do that in a separate post, but if you see this please feel free to message me or post here!)

There is no ignition control module - but possibly he means the DME (or electronics control module). However, if he initially thought that the fuel pump is the problem I would guess that the fault is actually the crankshaft sensor.
Without a signal from the crankshaft sensor the DME will not supply power to the fuel pump......

This is the DME = Digitale Motor Elektronik http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/part...BMW-840i&mg=12

and do not believe your mechanic immy, DME's very seldom fail.
Find a shop which has the proper diagnostic equipment, but do not buy parts because the mechanic says "is likely a problem with ......" = he does not know for sure.

Yes, I agree with Erich above - your mechanic is completely lost and is now throwing parts and your money at the problem. The DME's are extremely reliable and it is much more likely an external sensor has failed. Also, it is worth pointing out that the fuel pump does not run unless the engine is turning over (cranking or running) and a signal is coming from the crankshaft sensor.
Time to move your car somewhere else - or possibly suggest that your mechanic asks for help here!

When a mechanic tells you "you need a DME", translation: I don't know WTF is going on, I am lost! Please go away!
