Is there any fix for this? When I start up my 2000 528i, the secondary air pump whistles loud until it shuts off after about a minute or so. It's every time the air pump kicks on.
Have you checked to see that the plastic hoses aren't cracked or disconnected? That's usually what makes it louder.

You can take the motor end of the pump apart to expose at least one of the bearings.
If your lucky a few drops of oil may help.....maybe.
Make sure your secondary air valve isn't all gunked up carbon and not fully closing, that kills the SAP.
Also sometimes the rivets that hold the main pieces together get loose, them drill them out and replace with screws
I love my noisy SAP.
It's probably worn bearings in your case.
I almost never hear mine. Possibly due to the age of my ears but isn't this thing activated below a certain outdoor temp? I half-assumed it wouldn't even come on during summer weather. The few times I have heard it, it sounded like a crazed vacuum cleaner but that was in wintertime. Coincidence?
I hear mine every cold start, it's even louder in the winter.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies guys! I'll check the hose first. Hopefully thats the problem, if not I'll see how it looks inside.
If you hear a lot of noise then something isn't 100%. On my E39 everything works fine and it's difficult to notice. On the E46 it's a bit different and louder I think just because the motor isn't as hidden away deep in the fender, but thats a difft story.

The air pump on my 2002 e39 with 240K miles is nearly silent.
The air pump on my 1999 Z3 has been loud and sometime screechy since new.
