Please help 2000 740il not starting !!

Hey you guys, sorry for the long story but I have a 2000 BMW 740il. I brought this car last year with an overheating problem , I did a whole coolant system overhaul replacing every hose and water pump and more . I fixed the overheating problem and it was running fine until November I was driving and a hose blewout . The one under the water pump for the A/T cooler . I was going to repair it myself because I like to tackle projects like this but I had gotten surgery the next day . So my father took it to his friend which is a shop down the street from my house . They DID NOT know what they were doing . After my surgery I went by to pick up my car and they had broken my serpentine belt and were putting back everything in the wrong place . I had to put everything back together with only one hand because I had surgery on my right hand. So after I put the car back together I turned her on and realized she was misfiring but I drove her home anyway because I was pissed at those cheap mechanics . After I took it home I turned her off and the next day I went to go and turn her own and she was stalling I don't know what's wrong with her but I need her fixed it's been 8 months since she's been sitting and I've been throwing money into her with hopes that one day she'll run again.. ANYONE PLEASE HELP ME ... I brought a new fuel pump, fuel filter, change spark plugs, coils, I even thought the DME was bad so I replaced the DME with the matching key and ignition and EWS and the car started but then would cut right off . Now it does the same thing as before you go to start it and it just cranks nothing else please I now it does the same thing as before you go to start it and it just cranks nothing else please I really need help . I love my e38 but that Mechanic shop Idk what they did to it ..

Start with wires and sensors, e.g. crank and cam sensors, and check if anything has been cut or damaged. Especially check the crank sensor. One of my previous cars had crank sensor going bad and it would kill the engine while driving or prevent starting it.

I've tried reading the codes but no codes came up and the car has a new crank sensor and both camshaft sensors . Those were my first two culprits to check . After that the same thing. I've check wires and all and everything seems fine . I don't know what else

I had a similar problem with my 2000 740i where it would not start at all. It turned out to be the thermostat. It is controlled by the DME. The thermostat shorted and took a fuse that feeds power to the DME. Remove a few Allen screws from the E Box and locate a fuse holder that has 5 30 Amp fuses. The holder is separate from the rest of the fuses and is white or off white in color. In my case, one of the fuses was blown. After I replaced the thermostat and replaced the fuse, it has been starting and running flawlessly. Good luck.

No start it's either fuel or crankshaft sensor. If it was thermostat you can read fault code stored, no check engine light though.

I've checked the fuses in the e-box and they are fine all 5 of them . My thermostat was put in brand new in August of last year from advance auto but I checked it and it seems fine. I've checked everything from the fuel system and everything seems good . I've replace the crankshaft sensor twice . It upsets me because I wanted to take her to BimmerFest East tomorrow but I guess I can't . I still don't know what it is .

I would do the following if I were you, giving a chance that this is not an issue due to mechanical part such as chain and guide problem, overheating and so on.

1. Check for spark. Remove sound top insulation, remove valve cover plastic covers, remove coil packs before that disconnect wires, remove spark plugs > connect wires back to coils and put safely on top of the engine use cloth pads under them so they do not touch any metal parts. Install plugs into coil. have help to turn engine. put one coil with plug installed close to engine ground while whole assembly on the cloth pad and see if there is a spark while engine is being turned. repeat on all 8. Be careful not to get electric shock, handle with gloves and care, no being bare foot on the ground.

2. If you get spark and gas engine should at least start or showing signs of it.

3. Check gas supply. There is schrader valve on fuel rail. Take pressure gauge and measure. it should be over 42. Check fuel pressure while turned. I can look at TIS for correct fuel pressure if needed or someone on forum might be able to chip in.

4. It's highly recommended to obtain DIS/TIS/Progman/INPA software if you own a BMW. I purchased on Ebay from the guy located in Romania and it was awesome, it helps to eliminate a lot of guessing. You can run diagnostics on your car at any given time. Highly recommend.

5. If you get spark to plugs while engine is being turned I would eliminate all electronics and concentrate on fuel delivery testing for now.

Also, look for oil in spark plug holes

The hose your Dad and friend tinkered with is on the driver's side of the engine. I wonder if they disconnected the VANOS or camshaft position sensor on that side of the engine. Since the starter operates, I would rule our the EWS relay and the DME relay. Check to see if the coils get power. If you have an oscilloscope of maybe a DVM, see if you can see the DME activating the coils during engine start.

Hey Karenas, I will try that tomorrow if not Monday because I will be at Bimmerfest . I know when it was running I had did the valve cover gaskets which was quite a difficult task but I got it done . Old525i I'll try that Monday because I would need to get an oscilloscope from my local hardware store

Could be as simple as fuel pump went caput. Starting fluid sprayed into intake would give an idea. If it at least catches up or trying to catch up when turned it's no fuel supply, if no signs of anything ignition or electronics/ sensors....

I've changed my fuel obviously with a brand new one from BMW. I tried to starting fluid and nothing happened she just keeps cranking that's it. I just wish someone from the area come down and take a look at it

Have you read fault codes? You need to read DME first and see if there are any faults stored. You can try to remove A/C belt and crank again. This is a lot of guessing. I would read fault codes first so you don't walk blind around. There are many scan tools available even at autozone which you can return if not needed later on. I would recommend BMW software installed on laptop. I have purchased software from this guy on Ebay user ID diy_bmw_garage. It's 35 bucks. And, really worth it.

Try get scanner from autozone for start and read engine fault codes if there are any. It wont scan your car as fine as BMW soft but it may catch something. Did you check plugs? Are they wet, oily. Did you check if spark plug holes has any oil puddles? Has your electronic throttle body wire connector properly attached if attached at all? Did you check vanos and camshaft sensor wires connectors one each bank? Does your fuel pump precharge when you turn ignition on. Should be short buzzing sound in the rear.

I would read fault codes first and obtain BMW diagnostic software first.

Hello ALL!!
Well for starters, let me say I have gone through so many post on how to R/R and this site is BOMB!!! I finally encountered what I thought would never happen....the dreaded DME short.....Carmabaaaa!!
As so many bimmer vatos here have had the "antifreeze" from the thermostat, well hold boys druuummm roll.... I had OIL, yep no joke, oil from bank 1 side underneath the one cover that has a large wire loom just next to the intake manifold. It looks to be coming from a connector near the fuel injector. I know I know no oil near the there but I has a pool of oil inside the box.
I used the CRC cleaned out the plug until it ran clear and sprayed the entire wire loom and box, replaced the 30 amp fuse an WALAAAA!
My baby she purrs really good now and the "engine and trans fail programs" are gone!!
