    E39 540iT Engine Swap w/ E38 740i

    Hello Guys,

    I was offered an engine swap for my '99 E39 540iT, the donor being an '97 E38 740i. I've seen posts about going the opposite direction (Newer 740 to older 540) but does anyone have experience with performing this? Any harnass/ computer complications?

    Won't work. The 97 has an M62, the 99 has an M62TU. Not only would it be a downgrade in performing, unless if you plan on running a standalone (I'm sure you don't) it's essentially impossible

    I've seen a TU car downgraded to an NV it's far from impossible, but even the owner said "it wasn't worth the effort". There was even a 2000 running an M60B44 hybrid, and danieljames' OBD1 2001 E38.

    You're right, I shouldn't have said impossible, instead "hard and pointless"

    I could see the m60b44 being mildly worth while if you were doing it to get dual row timing, but other that that?

    I should note as well, if you end up buying an M62 from an e38, e53, l322, etc, you'll probably need to swap out the oil pan from your current engine
