I think I have read every post about this issue and in the end the OP does not state what the outcome was.
Anyway my shifter is getting stuck in gear or in neutral and I cannot shift into another gear. Then without any obvious reason it will start working again, but it is getting progressively worse. Car has 230K miles on it. No leaks and fluid is good. I am guessing that until my mechanic can look at it this will be hard to diagnose.
Any ideas?

Is this only with the car running or does it not shift when stopped too?

Do you mean not moving or engine off?
With engine off the car shifts without the clutch, but it does the same thing - it gets stuck.

Clutch not fully disengaging? Hard to tell from your description. If so, Clutch slave or master may be shot.

I believe you said it gets stuck even if the engine is not running. Make sure linkage is clean and not too much play. On the fluid, how old is it and which fluid? Every one has their favorites. When mine got balky I replaced my fluid with factory Pentosin, no help. I did some research and finally tried some Motorcraft XT-M5-QX. I'd check the external linkages and bushings in the shifter for worn, broken, or missing bushings, even the cup and ball on the shifter itself first.

Can also be bad arrestor ball guides, if shifting is still difficult with engine stopped.

If my shifter is getting stuck and unstuck without the use of the clutch wouldn't that narrow down the fault to just the linkage?
- Hydraulic fluid - level good, but dirty
- Transmission fluid - changed within the last year, but have not verified level
- Slave cylinder - changed a few years ago
- Master cylinder - original?
- Shift linkage - possible binding
- Transmission - possible arrester repair kit needed

I don't understand your statement. If the problem exists whether the engine is running or not, the detents are likely at fault.

To clarify my statement the engine is off and clutch is not being engaged at all. The shifter still gets stuck and unstuck as I move it through the gears.
I don't know what will fix the problem I am just trying to give you the symptoms in hopes someone like yourself can help me narrow it down.
Do you still think it is the detents?

Isn't that what shifters do? Put in gear and it stays. Pull it out of gear and it stays there, too.
Are you trying to say that you have to apply excessive force to the shifter to get into gear, and then have to force it to come out of gear?
If this happens regardless of whether the engine is running or not, than the throw-out bearing is probably not the cuplrit.
Sounds like you got some detent probs.
air in system, slave, throw out bearing in that order...detents only denote slop in shifting action.

As others stated, it is most likely the detents hanging up, or the shift linkages are so worn they are getting locked up.
If it was only happening while the car was running, I'd say either the syncros are shot, the clutch is failing to disengage (aka the clutch slave or master is not pushing enough fluid to push the lever out). If the throwout bearing was shot it would be making a retarded amount of noise.

If the trans is coming out, do a clutch/flywheel/ rear main seal while youre at it.

- Tech replaced missing and worn bushings going into the transmission. I am guessing to the linkage.
- Transmission would only go into 4th after replacing the bushings.
- Tech tried to remove detents and were unable to get them out.
- Tech and a transmission shop both confirmed the transmission was shot.
- I ordered a transmission from Adam (Clemester)

- Used transmission needed - Adam (Clemester) provide an M5 replacement
- New rear seal (my shop tore the upper oil pan gasket getting out the rear seal - they replaced it and the oil pan gasket on their dime)
- New LUC clutch
- New LUC flywheel
- New shifter bushings

Agreed. The 420G is a very robust gearbox.
My guess is that the mechanic did not shift the box into 1st, per instructions, before beginning the job.
