95 e36 m3 driver side door handle troubleshoot

bought used exterior door handle from eBay to replace my old one because the old one broke. I could get the handle out the door handle but the key hole doesn't come out all the through. so I can't thread the ring on and lock it in. everything is identical as the old one. any help or tips to get this on correctly would be nice. I've trying to get on for 2 days now. can't really find anything detailed on this so I've finally decided to join bimmerforums
