    Wiper intermittent switch not working

    Hey guys!

Been enjoying my 523i the last couple of weeks, finaly got my driverslicense!

    Problem number 1:
Found quickly out that the intermittentswitch for the wiper is not working, leaving it to hold for 5 seconds no mather what position it is, keep in mind the other constant speeds works as intended.

Anyways, I've been googling and couldn't find anything, so I just ask here.

    Problem numer 2:
Also a even smaller problem, the previous owner didn't do a good job cleaning, so I have insects inside the rear interior lights, I found out how to remove them from the car, but not how to open the clear window piece, so I can't reach where the insects are..

Do you have the rain sensor windscreen?

By the looks of it, yes. http://imgur.com/a/jGH9N
But I was not informed by the previous owner.

But, the wiper switch looks like this: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/-P1IsYXTh0M/hqdefault.jpg

Yeah, that's the rain sensor. Just like my Touring at first, what you thought should be the settings for intermittent operation, are settings for the sensitivity of the rain sensor. My other E39's do not have the rain sensor, and I have been on the fence about which I prefer. But in my wagon, which has the sensor, it actually does a good job of operating when it needs to, once you know your settings, I have come to actually not mind the rain sensor to tell you the truth. Let's just say, I like both versions, since I am an old school kind of guy.

Aah, well ok then! Thanks for clearing that up!

But, then is my question, how do I test that the sensor is working? Since it seems like its the exact same timing nomather the sensitivity and rain amount.

Have the car running, use a hose and vary the amount of "rain" on the windshield. see what it does, play with the settings. Once you get used to how it operates, you will find yourself actually liking the setup.

Will do! And if it doesn't change? As I am afraid something is wrong.

Just confirmed, the rain sensor doesn't work. Same amount/timing on wipes as with no water on it.

Did you notice the wiper issue while parked/stopped or while at speed?

Just got back from lunch, So it does not work.... Try taking off the two halves of the plastic housing the base of the rear view mirror. The rain sensor module is in there. Check to see if the wire is plugged into the module, maybe it just came undone. If it is good, check the fuse, F38 in the glovebox fuse, F38 is for the rain sensor. If that is good, unplug the wire to the rain sensor module, check for 12 volts. pin 1 should be a purple and white wire. Pin 2 should be ground >>> Brown and black. If you are getting 12 volts, the module has gone bad. I just happen to have one that I didn't need by the way..... Haha! I'm one hell of a salesman aren't I? I had gotten one and it turned out my wire was just not plugged in all the way.

It might be that your wiper relay is overdue for replacement. If it's the same as other e39s, it will be a tall brown one inside the "e-box" located under the car-right-side cabin filter housing. These are stacked, double relays, with two contact sets, one of which I think handles the intermittent function.

Snotty knows his stuff, though, so maybe he will tell us if you even have one of these in your car.

I did take off the cover there, and the module is there, also plugged in, double checked to to see if they have been loose, but no, sits pretty well there.
I have the fuselayout here, and 38 in the glovebox say "Bel.Schaltkulisse" With my rusty german, I think its lights for "switching backdrop" whatever that that is?
I will open it again to check the voltage. You just happen to have one, yes :p I accually think the postage will be more expensive than the module itself :p

Just opened up again, and it gives off 12 volts, not sure how that effects the module though, since I disconnected it to get a value for it?

Stupid question, the wiper switch is on position 1 right? Position 1 is where the rain sensor is active. the other two positions are for low and high wiper operation. Double check your fusebox, it may be different for a 523, I dunno. But I just went out to my car, and F38 was for something else. For some reason, I was thinking it was 38. Someone said I know my stuff.... Sure, I do, but some of it is all jumbled up with other facts, my mind is all discumboobulated or something.

Yes, it is in position 1.
Can't see anything about rain sensor in the fusebox layout though, can it be wipers?

Another question, do you have automatic headlights? The rain sensor also handles the automatic lights.

Look at the headlight switch on your dashboard, there should be the On/Off, but if it has auto, there will also be an A or Auto.

Never mind about this, I'm pretty sure it's only relevant without rain sensor (for some reason only the first post showed when opened the thread), but there's a setting for fixed delay when stopped.

Anyway it's sounding like you may have an issue with your rain Senora as it tells the GM how fast to run the wipers. Dirt or chips on the windshield could make the auto wipes go even without any rain but if adding water didn't make them go faster then it's likely the sensor.

A bad wiper relay caused a similar problem with my rain sensor/intermittent settings.
