"01 Sport with the A5S440Z transmission, it seems to go to fail safe only when shifting, I suspect the position switch, it's a sealed unit, does anyone know the values or how to test the position switch. It has 5 wires (pink, gray, black, white and yellow. Thanks

Problem solved it was the position switch, I swapped it out with the one from my 540, the fail safe is now in the 540. I'll purchase a new switch. Thanks
Glad we could help!
J/K. Good on you to solve your problem. One of the great things about owning an e38 & an e39.

Hello Motion, can you tell me where this switch is located? I am having what sounds to be the same problem with my 735i.
Thanks,
Stewart.
Mine (A5S440Z) was located on the drivers side between the shift selector cable and the transmission. Confirm as best as you can, because the switch runs upward of $400.00.
Cheers man, i'm booking it into a gearbox shop- lost interest in a home fix! Oh well....
