There is a cup holder for hanging on the side of the center consul. Do a search.

I use the Ultimate Cup Holders in my E34s and E39. I first bought two fro the E39 and test fit one in the E34s and it just needed some minor bending by hand so it fit flatter against the transmission tunnel. They hold everything from 12oz cans to 46oz fountain drinks with no problem. They also hold my 40oz insulated Hydro Flask.

My mid 90's SAAB didn't have cup holders and now my mid 90's BMW doesn't either. I chalked it up to "Only Americans have food in cars"
I've learned that 2 To-Go cups of coffee or drinks fit nicely in the existing blank space of the center console behind the window switches.
Forum member SFGadgetGuy made some nice ones that he sold here a few years ago. You can search his user name to see examples. I have one for each of my two E34s and the color match (parchment and light silver gray) is excellent. Not sure he's still here or if he still makes the holders. Every so often they show up in the classified section here.
Be advised that there are two very similar looking cup holders for the E34 and E32. The E32 console has a wider side than our E34s so an E32 cup holder will sit there but be a bit loose. The difference is small but the fit is much different.

I cut down a E36 holder I found at a junk yard. I havent finished the "bondo", but works quite well.
They all look like dog shit (or hinder shifting) and none seem to fit in the glovebox for storage....
Stick with beverages which come in a standard 12oz or 16oz can, and they fit quite snuggly into the existing recess.

Either take Mykk's option of basically wedging drinks in the center console, or go the nuclear route (confirmed to fit E34s): https://e30head.com/t/e30head-cup-holders
I'll be doing the E30head double setup sometime when I feel like burning $80.
My E30 cup holder works on my E34...

The E30 and E36 factory cup holders are too small for me. Unless one only drinks soda or Red Bull.
The cup holders made by SFGadgetGuy are back on ebay. Ebay also has a $15 off coupon through 5/31. Just picked one up in parchment for my e34 touring. No affiliation to seller, just trying to be helpful.

Also, here is also another (less expensive) option being offered on ebay:
