I own a 9t4 325is bmw. 316k miles and still going. intend to keep it. Want to add a second vehicle. thought about X3 first, then started considering X5. what are the pros and cons of one vs the other? I am planning to spend 5-6k. Found several in that price range for both models. Enjoy my bmw .only owner. lots of upgrades. Don't mind getting my hands dirty. Do most of my own work. would be willing to learn about either model.
Since the vehicles are different sizes and have different levels of interior quality and will perform/handle diffently due to these differences along with weight, transmission, engine offerings. I'm not sure how to quantify pros & cons due to these multiple differences. The pros & cons would depend on individual preferences...and since we have no idea of what that would mean or be for you...my suggestion would be to look at both vehicles and determine from a basic point of view which one you would prefer or could live with.

I had a brand new X3 loaner for a few days a while back when my X5 was in for service. My non-scientific comparison:
X3 felt small, rode rougher, less comfortable driver zone. I hated the very light power steering. These are all just my personal observations, otherwise it seemed like a nice car. I did like the HUD but found it less than impressive, especially during the day. Who knows, it could just have needed some adjustment.
I was happy to get back in my "old" 2009 X5.
Personally, I despise X3's. I would take an X5 over X3 anyday

Single? Go for the x3.
Family? Go for the X5.
That's only space wise.
On x3 you'll get better fuel economy.
My quick thoughts.
