Is this edge wear normal for the benevolent rotors? On an e36

If it feels like you have a 'lip' on the outer edge, you need to get them sanded down.

New pads

Took apart the rotor to check out the pads and lube shims. This is how the pads look... Normals wear at edges?

Rotor looks fine other than being drilled... Pads look defective. That top edge should not be crumbling away.
Looks like cheap aftermarket rotors with a rough surface machining doing exactly what was paid for.
Also don't like the tapered upper edge of the brake pad you are holding.

Contacted Alebono and they said that the tapered edge on the brembo rotor is not supposed to be there. I have attached a pic. Can anyone confirm this?
They will send out replacement brake pads

Rotor looks fine. The tapered edge should not be contacted by the brake pad.
Drilled/cast rotors do not have any benefit on most applications. Cost more and have less surface area/more potential problems. Throw on some brembo blanks next time. Hawk HPS make for good street pads. Give them a try next time.
Did you break them in properly?

I've heard bad things about the akebono pads

That looks like a bit of hard(er) material on the outer edge of the pad which has since broken out. I'd call it a defect in the pad material.
Not really an issue unless the pad deteriorates further, at least keep an eye on it.
If you can leave two black stripes from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next, you have enough horsepower. - Mark Donohue
