    The Techno Turd 98 M3

I wasn't looking for an E36 M3, but this fell into my lap at a price I couldn't refuse. About 180K miles, dove gray interior. Kind of a long story on why it's missing some parts, but its less sketchy than you might think.

Nice find. I'll be curious to see how the work progresses. Hopefully you'll post updates as you de-turd the car.

It has LTW's, "clears" and I'm dropping it off the trailer later tonight.

    Am I doing it right?

Previous owner removed his carbon fiber hood before he sold it to me so today it got a hood

Tried to order an ECS replica bumper but it won't calculate shipping to my house (what happened to free shipping??) so may need to buy from someone else. Have some headlights at home. On the lookout for amber corners, sidemarkers and tails.

Not sure yet if I want to try to polish this turd to try to make it something pretty (my friend has a paint booth in his backyard... hmmm) or just enjoy it as-is. Currently I just want to make it a running and somewhat "whole" car again

Either way, progress is moving fast. Last night I bought:
Techno Violet used OEM bumper - $200 (it needs some repairs, but pre-painted so I can rock it in the meantime and OEM for the same price as a replica... why not)
Some sort of ellipsoid-looking replica headlights with corners - $80
    HVAC panel - $50
    Tail lights - $65
Plus the hood puts the current total damage at $600

Ordering the cooling system stuff tonight, hopefully that will get here mid next-week and I can start driving this thing
Thinking s54 z3 rad, lower temp fan switch and mech fan delete

I prefer mechanical fan, just with a stewart pump and new fan clutch. (mainly as the aux fans tend to fail as well).

Hmm. That makes me think I'll have to head down there sometime soon to grab as much cooling system stuff as I can. Then get it running on some used stuff to make sure the engine is good before spending real money on it. I'll text you...

My first BMW was an E36 M3 - the fan clutch seized, fan exploded and broke the upper rad hose on it's way out (popped open the hood too, but didn't dent it thankfully)
Parted out a stripped 95 M3 many years back that suffered the same fate
This car had the fan grenade a few weeks ago too, the busted fan is still installed in the car

Maybe it's a climate thing, our fan clutches probably work harder than they would in cooler climates so they wear out faster? I'm not really sure but I know that I have a bad track record with these things and both my Z3's are running without mechanical fans so my E36 will too

haha good deal. It could be a climate thing.

Up here, the electrical fans get all corroded ( both terminals and bearings) and quite often don't work. So I can't really trust them.

Gave the Techno some love, put in the cooling system stuff I bought from Chamberlin yesterday and some Depo headlights I had sitting around that I bought for my first E36 M3 years ago. Drove it around the block, suspension felt good - steering rack felt a little numb. And I'm definitely going to have to dig back into the intake manifold, it's throwing a lot of codes related to MAF and there is a very audible vacuum leak, plus it wants to stall left and right (and did stall quite often). Not sure if that could be related to removing the ASC unit - I'm going to re-install it and just let it dangle somewhere (currently it is unplugged). But it ran fairly well overall. Went with the S54 Z3M rad and standard thermostat, going to put in a lower temp fan switch eventually. It's almost a complete car! Bumper should hopefully be getting here this week. Also waiting on tail lights and sidemarkers. Once it's a complete car that runs I'll start fiddling with it

    Well I am pretty PO'ed...

    Purple bumper I bought
    s-l1600.jpg

Not purple bumper I received... also in way worse shape than the one I bought

    0726171122.jpg

Oh well... threw some trims on and kidney grills and messaged the seller about it

    0726171221b.jpg

Always looks funky to me with a mis-matched bumper. It's also just sitting there for now, I don't have a bumper support yet
    ...
Tails and sidemarkers showed up a bit later in the day... looking good, think its about time to reserve my spot at Pebble Beach

    0726171648_HDR.jpg

Haven't fixed the intake stuff yet and its still stalling left and right, but at least it looks like a car

Tidied up the intake stuff yesterday. Had to make do with the wrong intake boot elbow, think the one I got at the junkyard was for an M50. Just plugged the extra vacuum hole and it worked fine. Drives fine(ish) now although as soon as it entered closed loop it very distinctly changed it's idle...

Also notice how I route the MAF harness underneath, so it's out of sight. This is one of the many steps I take to ensure this car is aesthetically perfect.

    0730170856.jpg

We also bled the cooling system so we drove it around the block... thought I heard something dragging...

Got home, after some strong revs we see black smoke. We also have 4 O2 sensor codes so I take a peek under the car to verify we have catalytic converters installed and that everything looks ok...

    0729171903.jpg

Yeah that dragging sound was the O2 sensors kissing the pavement

This is one of those moments where you wonder "what have I gotten myself into?"
Who freaking does that? For what purpose? I'm remaining cautiously optimistic for now - maybe he removed an aftermarket exhaust and didn't bother plugging the O2's back into the stock exhaust? Either way, next order of business is to install the O2's and see what happens.

This lighting lets me fool you into thinking the car looks nice. The sedan corner lamp is also really growing on me... I bought a set of coupe corners but they might not find their way on to the car...

Think I had this bumper installed before the FedEx guy who dropped it off even left the neighborhood...

    0802171443.jpg

Another thing I do to ensure this car is aesthetically perfect - taking the extra time to hide the zip tie heads under the bumper cover
And for some reason the seller cancelled the order of the corner lamp set. So sedan corner it is

Got some Techno Violet rattle cans in the mail today for the fog deletes and whatever spoiler I decide on... will get the O2 stuff looked at Saturday

This car is missing it's third brake light right now so the brake lights dont function, the car also needs a new trunk lid... now you are starting to see a little more of that juicy juicy jankiness...

    0802171540_HDR.jpg

I'm thinking of just getting a good trunk with an OEM spoiler or bastardizing a coupe trunk to integrate a convertible 3rd brake light to run a GT2 replica spoiler. I really love that idea so I might go for it
