    Bumper and Hood Re-Spray

I got hundreds of little rock chips on my bumper and hood, I'm getting quotes to remove, strip, and re-spray them. What have you paid?

I got an estimate of $500 for the hood alone. This is from a very good shop that mostly paints high-end classics. I have a 1998 Z3 M, Boston Green.

My quote is a bit higher, but the quote is to remove, strip and paint them. Were yours removed?

They were removed. I will say that in hindsight I should have paid for a better quality shop. I had the place reaccomplish the paint due to poor quality on the first attempt. They also broke my side M grills and had to pay for all new ones. If top quality is what you want then a resto shop is preferred ($$$) as opposed to a body shop that fixes moms Honda CRVs. You get what you pay for. Once the shop was aware I wasn't going to accept crap they stepped up and did a good job. Make your intentions for quality known at the beginning.

Might I suggest getting a new bumper cover that comes primed unless yours is pristine.... It's not worth getting an old cover repainted from my experience... Going to cost you at least 600-900, I'd think.
And it's worth it to get a decent job done. Just the materials for the job are probably 200$. And respraying clear is not easy. One needs a booth and such.
A little too much info, maybe, but don't balk at 600$ if it sounds high, and if they agree to do it for that--- have them show you some of their other finished work and see if it meets your expectations.

Stripping and re-priming is key--the reason our bumpers and hoods chip so much is that BMW was experimenting with water based paint at the Spartenburg plant and our primer has weak adhesion. $1,500.00 is a good price for the hood and bumper alone. If there are any issues with the bumper cover, like stress cracks or broken tabs, then replace it rather than repair it, otherwise it has to be sanded down by hand through the primer either way, as the factory primer is the same on the replacement as it is on yours. Take a close look at your rocker covers, mirrors, and quarter panels as well--if you're going through the effort, and these need refinishing, now's the time.

That's what I was quoted. There's no damage to the bumper cover except a small crack on the very bottom of the cover that's been there since I bought it 14 years ago. Rest of the body is pristine.
